Packing light has never been my strong suit. I love having options, and I usually prefer to check a bag so I can bring everything I want. But for my upcoming two-week trip to Japan, checking a bag isn’t an option, so I’m scaling down and fitting everything into a carry-on suitcase and a personal item (a backpack).

It’s a challenge, but after researching the best packing tips for travel, I’ve put together a strategy that works—and I want to share it with you! If you’re also looking for suitcase packing tips and ways to fit everything you need into a carry-on, this guide will help. Plus, I’ve created a free printable carry-on packing list to make your packing even easier.

Packing Light 101

1. Choosing the Right Luggage

Since I’m packing light with only a carry-on bag and my backpack, choosing the right one was key. Here’s what to look for in a suitcase:

  • Size Compliance – Most airlines allow 22” x 14” x 9” for carry-on bags. Always check your airline’s specific rules.
  • Lightweight & Durable – A hard-shell suitcase protects your belongings, while a soft-shell offers more flexibility.
  • Easy Organization – Look for compartments, expandable sections, and compression straps to maximize space.

For my personal item, I’m bringing a backpack that fits under the seat, where I’ll keep my travel carry-on essentials like electronics, snacks, and important documents.

2. Packing Smart: What to Bring & What to Leave

The key to travel light packing is choosing versatile items and sticking to a packing travel list so you don’t overpack.

Essentials to Pack for Vacation:

  • 7 days’ worth of clothing – I’ll do laundry once during my trip.
  • 1 pair of comfortable walking shoes (wear these on the plane).
  • 1 pair of flats or sandals for dressier occasions.
  • Lightweight jacket or sweater – It doubles as a pillow or blanket during the flight.
  • Multi-use toiletries – Like a tinted moisturizer with SPF.
  • Minimal accessories – Small pieces that add variety without bulk.

🚫 What I’m Leaving Behind:

  • Extra shoes – Too bulky! One main pair plus a backup is plenty.
  • Heavy jackets – Instead, I’m layering lighter pieces.
  • Full-size toiletries – I’ll use travel-size items or buy what I need in Japan.

3. Wear Your Bulkiest Items on the Plane

One of my favorite carry-on packing tips is to wear the bulkiest items during travel. This saves valuable space in your suitcase. On my flight to Japan, I’ll be wearing:

  • My heaviest shoes (comfortable sneakers).
  • A sweater or jacket for warmth.
  • A scarf (which can double as a blanket).

This simple trick frees up tons of room in my bag!

4. Travel Bag Organization: How to Maximize Space

Good travel bag organization makes all the difference when you’re packing light! Here’s what I’m using to pack efficiently:

Compression Packing Cubes or Vacuum-Sealed Bags – These are a game-changer! They squeeze out extra air, reducing bulk and maximizing space. I use compression cubes for clothes and vacuum-sealed bags for bulky items like jackets.
Packing Cubes – These keep clothes compact and organized.
Toiletry Bag – I use a hanging toiletry bag for easy access in small hotel bathrooms.
Tech Organizer – Keeps chargers, cables, and adapters tangle-free.

Rolling vs. Folding Clothes

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them saves space and reduces wrinkles. It also makes it easier to see everything inside your bag without digging through layers. Rolling your clothes is one of the keys to saving space when you’re packing light.

5. Packing List for Vacation: Must-Have Travel Bag Essentials

Here’s my carry-on packing list for this trip. I’m packing light! I keep having to remind myself of that fact:)

6. Be Prepared for the Weather

Weather can make or break your trip, so it’s important to pack accordingly while still keeping things light.

  • Check the forecast before you leave – If rain is expected, a lightweight rain jacket or travel-size umbrella is essential.
  • Layer your clothing – Instead of packing a bulky coat, I’m bringing a lightweight sweater, a compact down jacket, and a rain shell that can be layered for warmth.
  • Choose moisture-wicking fabrics – Especially if you’ll be in a humid climate!

By packing for the weather without overpacking, you’ll stay comfortable without filling up your entire bag.

7. Plan for Laundry

One of the best packing tips for travel is to pack for one week, not two, and do laundry halfway through the trip. I’m bringing:

  • A small bag of detergent sheets (lightweight & easy to use).
  • A travel laundry bag for dirty clothes.

This way, I can reuse outfits without overpacking!
