Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is crucial to make the most of your visit to Disneyland in the summer. By taking a few simple steps before your arrival, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience in the magical world of Disney.

  1. Park Tickets: Purchase tickets in advance and make your park reservations! Disneyland is a popular destination, especially during the summer. Park tickets and reservations are required to enter Disneyland. Make sure you have both! Please don’t pay the full price for your Disneyland tickets or hotel! My partners at Get Away Today have the very best deals on tickets and hotels. You won’t find lower ticket prices anywhere else! Their customer service is top-notch, and they even have layaway plans. You can find them by clicking on the image below or by calling 1-855-GET-AWAY. Tell them that Melissa from Mix In Some Magic sent you the best deal!
  2. If you book a package with park tickets and a hotel room, you can use my code MIX10 to save an extra $10. That’s more churro money, friends!
  3. Book Your Hotel: Make sure you book your hotel in advance! The sooner, the better. Hotels near Disneyland are very popular and can book up quickly! The sooner you book your hotel, the more options you have, and options are always a good thing. I book all my hotels through Get Away Today. They have great deals! Many of their properties offer a free night with a stay, free parking, extra discounts, or a complimentary breakfast! You save the most money when you purchase a vacation package and bundle your hotel rooms with one of their discount resort ticket offers.
  4. Make dining reservations: Disneyland offers many options, from quick-service counters to fine dining establishments. However, popular restaurants can quickly fill up, especially during peak hours in the summer. Consider making dining reservations beforehand to secure your spot and minimize waiting times. The official Disneyland website provides an easy-to-use reservation system where you can browse the available restaurants and select your preferred date and time. You can make dining reservations 60 days in advance. If you need help getting the dining reservation you’re looking for, I recommend Mouse Dining. You tell them the date, time, and place, and they’ll notify you when a dining reservation becomes available. It’s a great way to score those hard-to-get reservations!
  5. Get familiar with the Disneyland app: The official Disneyland app is your go-to resource for all the latest and most accurate information about the park. Before your trip, visit the app and explore the sections dedicated to park hours, attractions, entertainment, characters, and wait times. This will help you once you’re on your vacation.

Choose the Right Dates

When planning your visit to Disneyland in the summer, selecting the right dates can significantly enhance your overall experience. By considering the timing of your trip, you can take advantage of several benefits and avoid the crowds that gather during peak periods.

  1. Best Days To Visit For Crowds: Disneyland is crowded. Disneyland in the summer is even more crowded. But, you can still have a great time! It’s hard to find a time to visit Disneyland, that’s not crowded these days. The least crowded day to visit Disneyland right now is Sunday. Surprised? Everyone assumes the weekends will be crazy busy, so they plan their trip for different days. The most crowded days are Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. I’ve got a whole post about dealing with crowds at Disneyland that will be helpful. Here, you can find more info, including a Disneyland Crowd Calendar for each month.
  2. Days To Avoid: Summer is a popular time for families to visit the park, as children are out of school for summer break, and many people take vacations. Consequently, you can expect larger crowds, longer wait times, and a more bustling environment during these periods. However, some times of the summer are just more crowded, especially holidays. Consider planning your trip to avoid major holidays(like the 4th of July) to make the most of your visit without feeling overwhelmed by the masses.

Beat the Heat

As you embark on your adventure to Disneyland in the summer, preparing for the warm weather and beating the heat is essential. Hot weather is just part of Disneyland in the summer. California summers can be pretty hot, but with a few simple strategies, you can stay cool and comfortable while enjoying all the magic Disneyland offers.

  1. Dressing comfortably and wearing sunscreen: When visiting Disneyland during the summer, it’s crucial to wear lightweight, breathable clothing. Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored outfits that allow air circulation and help regulate your body temperature. I like to bring a hat or even an umbrella to keep the sun off of me. Wear comfortable walking shoes too. Additionally, apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of your skin to protect against harmful UV rays!
  2. Stay hydrated and carry a water bottle: Hydration is critical to beating the summer heat, especially during an active day at Disneyland in the summer. Carry refillable water bottles with you and take advantage of the park’s numerous water fountains and hydration stations. Staying hydrated will keep you cool and maintain your energy levels, allowing you to make the most of your visit. You can also purchase cold beverages from the various food and drink vendors throughout the park. You can also get free ice water from any quick-service dining location.
  3. Utilize air-conditioned attractions, shows, and restaurants: Disneyland offers many air-conditioned attractions, shows, and restaurants where you can seek refuge from the heat. Take advantage of these indoor spaces to cool down and rest between outdoor activities. Popular attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and It’s a Small World provide a refreshing break from the sun while offering immersive entertainment. Likewise, enjoy shows like Mickey’s PhilharMagic or Enchanted Tiki Room, which provide comfortable seating in a cool environment. Additionally, indulge in delicious meals or snacks at air-conditioned restaurants to enjoy a relaxing and refreshing dining experience. A little break with the air conditioning is always a good time!
  4. Take a midday break: Taking a break in the middle of the day when crowds are the highest, and the heat is unbearable is a great idea! You can head back to your hotel for a nap and a dip in the pool or stay in the parks and catch a show like Tale of the Lion King. You could even ride the train a few times or hang out on Tom Sawyer’s Island for a bit. Whatever you decide to do, taking a break and returning to Disneyland when it’s cooler, and you’re rested is always a good idea. Then, you’ll be ready to stay late and enjoy the summer nights at Disneyland when it’s cooler!
  5. Bring a fan and cooling towels: Brining a fan and cooling towels can make a huge difference when visiting Disneyland in the summer. You can often buy these things inside the park, but they will charge you a lot for them, and you can buy them much cheaper on Amazon before your visit! Check out cooling towels and fans before your Disneyland summer trip.

Arrive Early

To make the most of your visit to Disneyland in the summer, one of the best strategies is to arrive early. By getting a head start on the day, you can maximize your time in the park, experience shorter wait times, and enjoy the magical ambiance of less crowded early mornings. Arriving early(often called Rope Dropping) will help you beat the heat and the crowds!

  1. Arrive 45-60 minutes early: Disneyland will open its gates about 30 minutes before the park officially opens! By getting there early, you’ll be able to get on a bunch of rides with minimal wait times. Check out my complete guide to rope-dropping at Disneyland so you know exactly how it’s done!
  2. I’ve got a podcast episode about rope dropping that will help you! It’s definitely worth a listen before your visiting to Disneyland in the summer.

By arriving early at Disneyland, you gain a significant advantage in terms of time management and crowd avoidance. You can enjoy shorter wait times for attractions and have the opportunity to savor the park’s ambiance during the peaceful early morning hours. So set your alarm, grab a hearty breakfast, and be among the first to enter Disneyland this summer!

Use Genie Plus

When visiting Disneyland in the summer, utilizing Genie Plus can be a game-changer, allowing you to maximize your time in the park and enjoy popular attractions with minimal wait times. This system offers a convenient way to skip lines and maximize your Disneyland experience. It is an additional fee, but most guests find it worth the extra cost.

  1. Skip the standby lines for select attractions: Genie Plus provides an opportunity to bypass the regular standby lines for select attractions. With Genie Plus, you can obtain a timed reservation digitally via the Disneyland app for a specific ride and return during your designated window. Enjoy a significantly shorter wait because you’ll enter through the Lightning Lane. You can secure Genie Plus Lightning Lanes for attractions directly from your smartphone!

Strategic Approach to Rides and Attractions

When visiting Disneyland in the summer, a strategic approach to rides and attractions can help you make the most of your time and ensure you experience the park’s highlights. Following a well-thought-out plan and utilizing technology can optimize your itinerary and minimize wait times.

  1. Starting with popular attractions early in the day: To maximize your chances of experiencing popular attractions with shorter wait times, it’s best to start your day by heading to these rides early. As soon as the park opens, make a beeline for the most sought-after attractions, such as the Indiana Jones Adventure, Space Mountain, Guardians of the Galaxy, or Toy Story Midway Mania. By arriving early, you can beat the crowds and enjoy these popular rides before lines build up.
  2. Don’t head to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Peter Pan, or Radiator Springs Racers first. These lines are longer first thing in the morning because everyone rushes there. Please don’t waste your precious morning hours in these long lines! I’ve got a video that explains it all below
  3. Utilizing Disneyland’s mobile app for wait time updates: The Disneyland mobile app is a valuable tool for enhancing your park experience. One of its most useful features is real-time updates on attraction wait times. Please use this information to decide which rides to prioritize and when to visit them. The app lets you see which attractions have shorter wait times, helping you navigate the park efficiently and avoid long queues. Keep an eye on the app throughout the day for the most up-to-date wait time information.
  4. Touring Plans: I’ve got touring plans that use Genie Plus and give you a step-by-step guide to your day at Disneyland! These touring plans are designed to help you skip the long lines and take the stress out of your Disney Day. I think you’ll love them and they’ll take the stress out of your vacation to Disneyland in the summer!

Take Breaks

When visiting Disneyland in the summer, it’s important to remember that pacing yourself and taking breaks throughout the day can significantly enhance your overall experience. Disneyland can be exciting and energetic, but it’s essential to find moments of relaxation and rejuvenation to enjoy the park to its fullest.

  1. Importance of pacing throughout the day: Disneyland offers many attractions, entertainment, and activities, and it can be tempting to try and do it all in one go. However, it’s crucial to pace yourself to avoid exhaustion and burnout. Take breaks at regular intervals, whether sitting down for a snack, finding a shady spot to rest, or exploring quieter areas of the park. Allowing yourself moments to recharge gives you the energy and enthusiasm to enjoy the rest of your day fully.
  2. Enjoying shows, parades, and entertainment options for relaxation: Disneyland is not just about rides and attractions; it also offers a variety of shows, parades, and entertainment options that provide an excellent opportunity to relax and unwind. Take advantage of these scheduled daily performances to enjoy captivating entertainment while giving your feet a break. Whether it’s the colorful spectacle of a Parade, the magical storytelling of Fantasmic!, or the live performances in Disney California Adventure Park’s Pixar Pier, these shows offer a chance to sit back, be entertained, and soak in the atmosphere. You could even make some time to visit your favorite Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse!
  3. Head back to your hotel to rest. Taking a break back at the hotel might not be the best option for everyone, but taking a long nap or swimming in the pool during the hottest hours of the day is lovely! After your break, you’ll be able to head back to the park and feel refreshed and ready to enjoy the park!

Remember, breaks are not just about physical rest but also about creating space for cherished moments and capturing the essence of Disneyland. Take the time to people-watch, savor a delicious treat, or enjoy the vibrant surroundings. These small pauses can add depth and richness to your overall experience, allowing you to appreciate the details and ambiance that make Disneyland magical.

By consciously pacing yourself and incorporating breaks into your day, you’ll be able to maintain your energy levels, prevent fatigue, and fully immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Disneyland in the summer. So, take those well-deserved breaks, enjoy the shows and entertainment options, and create a well-balanced and memorable visit to Disneyland in the summer.

Enjoy The Water Attraction

When visiting Disneyland in the summer, one of the best ways to beat the heat and have some refreshing fun is by enjoying the water rides scattered throughout the park. Disneyland offers a couple of water-based adventures that are perfect for cooling off and creating lasting memories.

  1. Cooling off with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure(coming 2024) or Grizzly River Run is great! Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Critter Country takes you on a log flume journey filled with whimsical characters from the Princess and the Frog film. And a thrilling drop into a splash-filled finale. Grizzly River Run, situated in Disney California Adventure Park, is a white-water rafting adventure through the Grizzly Peak wilderness. Brace yourself for twists, turns, and unexpected splashes as you navigate the rapids. These attractions offer a delightful combination of thrills and water play, making them ideal for hot summer days.
  2. Tips for staying dry or embracing the water experience: If you prefer to stay dry but still want to enjoy the water attractions, you can employ a few strategies. Consider bringing a waterproof poncho or wearing clothes that dry quickly to minimize the impact of the splashes. You can also sit towards the back of the ride vehicle to reduce your chances of getting wet. However, embracing the water experience can be equally enjoyable. Embrace the fun and let loose! Sit towards the front of the ride vehicle or welcome the splashes with open arms. Remember to store any belongings in waterproof bags or utilize the complimentary lockers near the attraction(Grizzly River Run only). I like to bring waterproof shoes or flip-flops to change into. No one likes wet tennis shoes!

Evening Entertainment

As the sun sets and the evening unfolds, Disneyland comes alive with enchanting nighttime entertainment that adds an extra touch of magic to your visit. From dazzling shows to breathtaking fireworks displays, the evening entertainment at Disneyland in the summer is an experience you won’t want to miss.

  1. Spectacular nighttime shows and fireworks: Disneyland offers a variety of nighttime shows that captivate and delight visitors of all ages. The iconic “Fantasmic!” is a must-see, combining water projections, live performances, and stunning special effects to create a mesmerizing spectacle. “World of Color One” in Disney California Adventure Park showcases a breathtaking display of fountains, lights, and Disney movie moments set to a musical soundtrack. And, of course, the “Wondrous Journeys” fireworks show is an incredible Disneyland experience that fills the night sky with dazzling colors and familiar Disney melodies. These evening shows are designed to ignite your imagination and leave you in awe.
  2. Checking the schedule and planning accordingly: To make the most of the evening entertainment, you must check the schedule and plan your day accordingly. The official Disneyland website and the Disneyland app provide up-to-date information on showtimes, allowing you to plan your activities and attractions around these evening spectacles. Please arrive at the viewing areas early to secure a good spot, as they fill up quickly. Consider grabbing a snack or a refreshing drink while waiting for the show to begin. Remember that fireworks displays are weather permitting, so it’s a good idea to have alternative plans in case of any schedule changes.

Staying Near the Park

One important consideration when planning your visit to Disneyland in the summer is where to stay. Choosing accommodations near the park, such as the Disneyland Resort Hotels or nearby hotels, offers several benefits that can enhance your overall experience and make your stay more convenient.

  1. Benefits of staying at Disneyland Resort Hotels: Staying at Disneyland Resort Hotels comes with various perks, including proximity to the park, early entry to select areas, and the ability to walk to the parks. These hotels are designed with Disney magic in mind, immersing you in the enchanting atmosphere of the parks. You’ll have the added advantage of easy access to the park, allowing you to take breaks, drop off purchases, or freshen up without wasting valuable time on lengthy commutes. Check out this post about staying on property at Disneyland for more info.
  2. Nearby Hotels: There are numerous hotels within walking distance of Disneyland, and some are closer than the Disneyland resort properties! Of course, staying off-property is also much cheaper. Nearby hotels provide a convenient and comfortable option for your stay. Check out my favorite nearby hotels.

 Dining Options

One of the highlights of visiting Disneyland in the summer is the incredible range of dining options throughout the park. From quick bites to fine dining experiences, Disneyland offers diverse restaurants and eateries to satisfy every palate. However, with the popularity of these establishments, it’s important to do your research and make reservations to ensure you get a taste of the culinary delights Disneyland offers.

  1. Range of dining options available in Disneyland: Disneyland boasts a wide array of dining options, catering to various tastes, dietary preferences, and budgets. Whether you’re craving classic American fare, international cuisine, or unique Disney-themed dishes, you’ll find something to tantalize your taste buds. From the iconic Blue Bayou Restaurant, where you can dine in a romantic New Orleans-style ambiance within the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, to the charming and character-filled Plaza Inn, there are options to suit every preference. Additionally, the park offers quick-service counters, snack carts, and mobile ordering options for those looking for a quick bite on the go.
  2. Importance of research and reservations for popular establishments: Popular dining establishments in Disneyland can get quite busy, especially during peak hours and the summer season. To avoid disappointment and long wait times, it’s essential to do your research and make reservations in advance. Utilize the official Disneyland website or the Disneyland app to explore the dining options and familiarize yourself with the menus, prices, and locations. Determine which restaurants or experiences pique your interest and consider making reservations as soon as they become available. This way, you can secure your preferred dining times and ensure a seamless experience during your visit.
  3. Additionally, remember that some dining experiences, such as character dining or themed dining events, may have limited availability and high demand. It’s advisable to book these experiences well in advance to secure your spot and create magical memories with your favorite Disney characters or in a unique dining setting.
  4. Quick Service Dining: There are tons of quick-service dining options at Disneyland! You can easily eat all your meals at quick-service restaurants if you want to avoid bothering with reservations.
