That’s exactly what this guide is here to help you do.

For now, take a deep breath. You’ve got this. You’re going to have the best time at Disneyland.

Best Time to Visit Disneyland (Crowds, Weather, Events & Tips)

One of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your Disneyland trip is when to visit. The timing of your trip can have a huge impact on your experience, including crowd levels, weather, ride availability, and seasonal events happening in the parks.

There’s no one “perfect” time to visit Disneyland. It really depends on what matters most to you. Some people want lower crowds and shorter wait times, while others want to experience special events, decorations, and limited-time entertainment.

To help you decide, I’ve created detailed monthly guides that break down exactly what to expect throughout the year, including crowd levels, weather, special events, and tips for each month.

👉 You can check out my Disneyland crowd calendars and monthly guides here.

Seasons, Weather, and Crowd Levels

Crowds at Disneyland tend to follow school schedules. The parks are typically busiest during summer, holidays, and weekends. If your goal is to avoid long lines and have a more relaxed experience, try visiting on weekdays when school is in session.

That being said, Disneyland is pretty consistently busy these days. Even if you visit during a slower time of year, you should still expect crowds.

Instead of trying to find a completely “empty” time to go, it’s more helpful to focus on avoiding the busiest days. That’s where a crowd calendar can make a big difference.

👉 Use my crowd calendars to help you pick the best possible dates for your trip.

Weather in Anaheim is generally mild year-round, which makes Disneyland a great destination almost any time of year. Summers can be hot, especially in the afternoons, while winter months may bring cooler temperatures and occasional rain. Checking the forecast before your trip will help you pack appropriately and plan your days more comfortably.

Special Events and Holidays

One of the best parts about visiting Disneyland is experiencing the parks during special events and seasonal celebrations.

Throughout the year, Disneyland offers events like Lunar New Year, the Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival, Halloween Time, and the Holiday season. These bring unique food, entertainment, ride overlays, and decorations that completely change the feel of the parks.

If you’ve always wanted to see Disneyland decorated for Halloween or Christmas, these can be incredible times to visit.

Just keep in mind that special events also tend to bring larger crowds. If you’re visiting during one of these times, having a plan becomes even more important so you can still make the most of your day.

Once you’ve picked your dates, the next step is figuring out what your trip will actually cost.

Budgeting for Your Disneyland Vacation

Once you’ve picked your dates, it’s time to figure out your budget.

A Disneyland trip can be as affordable or as expensive as you make it. The key is knowing where your money is going and having a plan before you go so there are no surprises.

Let’s break down the main things you’ll want to budget for.

Tickets, Hotels, Transportation, and Food

When planning your Disneyland budget, these are the four biggest expenses to think about:

Tickets
Ticket prices vary depending on the time of year and how many days you plan to visit. You’ll also want to decide if you want Park Hopper tickets so you can visit both parks in one day. Most people don’t need a park hopper. If you’re on the fence about it, I say skip it.

👉 Don’t pay full price for tickets. I always recommend booking through Get Away Today because they consistently have the best deals, and you can often stack promotions to save even more. You can use the link or give them a call at 855-GET-AWAY and tell them Mix In Some Magic sent you for the best rates!

Hotels
Where you stay can make a big difference in both your budget and your overall experience.

Disneyland Resort hotels are the most convenient, but they come at a higher price point. The good news is there are a lot of great off-property hotels within walking distance that are much more affordable.

👉 I book my hotel packages through Get Away Today because they offer discounted rates and deals like third or fourth night free. You can call 855-GET-AWAY and tell them Mix In Some Magic sent you.

Transportation
If you’re flying, you’ll want to factor in airfare and transportation to your hotel.

If you’re driving, don’t forget to include gas and parking costs. Parking at Disneyland can add up, so staying within walking distance can save you both time and money.

Food
Food at Disneyland can add up quickly, but there are ways to manage it.

Quick-service locations are more budget-friendly, and you’re allowed to bring your own snacks and water into the parks. You can also mix in a few special meals or treats so you still get the full Disneyland food experience without overspending.

💡 Ways to Save Money at Disneyland

If you’re trying to keep your trip more budget-friendly, here are a few of my favorite ways to save:

  • Book early to lock in the best prices on tickets and hotels
  • Bundle your hotel and tickets into a package deal to maximize savings
  • Travel during weekdays or less busy times when possible
  • Stay at a hotel within walking distance to avoid parking and transportation costs
  • Bring snacks and water to cut down on food spending

👉 You can often save the most by booking a vacation package through Get Away Today. You can use code MIX10 to save an extra $10 on packages.

If you want to go deeper into saving money, I’ve put together full guides that break it all down:

Now let’s talk about one of the biggest game changers for your park days.

Should You Use Lightning Lane at Disneyland?

One of the biggest decisions that will impact how long you wait in line is whether or not you use Lightning Lane.

Lightning Lane is Disneyland’s paid skip-the-line system. It allows you to reserve return times for select attractions and enter through a much shorter line instead of waiting in standby.

Pricing varies by day, but it typically costs around $30 or more per person, per day.

And here’s the truth. It can absolutely save you hours of waiting in line… but only if you use it the right way. More info on that below!

What Most People Don’t Realize

A lot of people assume that just buying Lightning Lane automatically means shorter waits.

But that’s not really how it works.

If you DON’T have a strategy, it’s easy to:

  • book rides at the wrong times
  • waste your return windows
  • or spend your day waiting longer than you need to

I see this happen all the time.

Why Strategy Matters

When you use Lightning Lane strategically, you can:

  • stack multiple rides
  • skip some of the longest lines in the park
  • and get way more done in less time

It’s honestly one of the biggest game changers for your trip.

👉 Start Here: The 2 Things That Will Save You the Most Time At Disneyland

If you only do two things before your trip, make it these:

First, grab my Lightning Lane cheat sheet
This shows you exactly which rides to book first, how to stack return times, and how to use Lightning Lane the right way so you don’t waste time.

Second, grab my rope drop cheat sheet
This walks you through exactly what to do in your first hour in the park, which rides to head to first, and how to avoid the longest lines of the day.

These two strategies alone can save you hours of waiting.

Basic Info You Should Know

You can purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass when you buy your tickets or add it later in the Disneyland app once you’re in the park.

Not every ride is included, and availability can run out quickly on busy days, which is another reason why having a plan ahead of time makes such a big difference.

Once you understand Lightning Lane, the next step is actually booking your trip.

How to Buy Disneyland Tickets (and Save Money)

Once you’ve picked your dates, it’s time to buy your park tickets and make your reservations.

First things first. You need a valid park ticket and reservation to enter Disneyland or Disney California Adventure. But where you buy your tickets actually matters more than most people realize.

Don’t Pay Full Price for Tickets

You can buy tickets directly from Disneyland, but you’ll pay full price if you do and the tickets are non refundable. Plus, if a better deal comes out you are stuck with the higher price you paid.

👉 I always recommend booking through Get Away Today. I’ve personally used them for 20 years, and they consistently have the best prices on Disneyland tickets and vacation packages.

They also offer:

  • discounted tickets
  • refundable tickets
  • vacation packages with extra savings
  • flexible payment options
  • and really great customer service

Plus, if Disneyland releases a ticket sale or better deal, you can call them and they’ll refund you the difference! You can see why I love them so much!

👉 You can call 855-GET-AWAY and tell them Mix In Some Magic sent you for the best deals.

Choosing the Right Ticket Type

There are two main ticket options you’ll need to decide between:

One Park Per Day
This lets you visit either Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure each day of your trip.

Park Hopper
This allows you to switch between both parks in the same day, starting at 11 AM. At some point in 2026, Disneyland has announced that they will bring back park hopping anytime.

Personally, I don’t usually recommend Park Hopper for most trips. There’s more than enough to do in each park to fill a full day, and staying in one park helps you avoid wasting time going back and forth.

Don’t Forget Park Reservations

In addition to your ticket, Disneyland also requires a park reservation for each day of your visit.

After purchasing your tickets, you’ll log into the Disneyland website or app and select which park you plan to visit each day.

Disneyland Resort includes:

  • Disneyland Park
  • Disney California Adventure
  • and Downtown Disney (which does not require a ticket)

Pro Tip

Tickets, reservations, and planning your park days all work together. Once you’ve booked your tickets, the next step is making sure you have a solid plan so you can make the most of your time in the parks.

Now that your tickets are handled, let’s talk about where to stay.

Where to Stay Near Disneyland (Hotels for Every Budget)

Once you’ve booked your tickets, the next step is choosing where to stay.

If you already booked a vacation package through Get Away Today, your hotel may already be taken care of. If not, this is where you’ll want to decide what matters most to you. Location, price, convenience, or amenities.

On-Site Disneyland Hotels

Disneyland has three on-property hotels:

  • Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa
  • Disneyland Hotel
  • Pixar Place Hotel

These are convenient options and fully immerse you in the Disney experience. But they do come at a higher price point, some are farther away than other hotels and for many families, they’re not always the best value.

If you’re considering staying on property, I break down the pros, cons, and differences in my full guide to staying at Disneyland hotels.

Off-Property Hotels (My Recommendation)

You absolutely do not need to stay on property to have an amazing Disneyland trip.

In fact, some of the best hotel options are just across the street and within walking distance of the parks. Many of these hotels are:

  • significantly more affordable
  • closer than some Disney hotels
  • and better suited for families

This is one of the easiest ways to save money on your trip without sacrificing convenience.

My Favorite Strategy

Our family almost always stays right across the street from Disneyland.

Being able to walk to the parks in the morning and come back for a break in the afternoon makes a huge difference, especially on longer park days.

If you’re trying to narrow down your options, I’ve put together a list of my favorite hotels within walking distance of Disneyland to help you choose.

Pro Tip

If you want to bundle your hotel and tickets and save even more, check with Get Away Today. They often have discounted rates and deals like extra nights free.

More Hotel Help

If you’re still deciding, I’ve stayed at or toured more than 40 hotels near Disneyland and put together detailed reviews to help you find the best fit for your trip.

👉 Check out my Disneyland hotel reviews here.

Getting to Disneyland (Airports & Transportation)

If you’re traveling from out of state, flying into Southern California is usually the easiest option.

The three main airports near Disneyland are:

  • John Wayne Airport (SNA) – closest and most convenient
  • Long Beach Airport (LGB) – smaller and easy to navigate
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) – most flight options, but farthest away

Once you arrive, getting to Disneyland is pretty straightforward.

Most people use:

  • Uber or Lyft
  • airport shuttles
  • or rental cars

If you’re staying within walking distance of the parks, you likely won’t need a car at all.

👉 I break down all the airport options, transportation choices, and what I recommend in my full guide to airports near Disneyland.

Once your major logistics are booked, you can start planning the fun details, like food.

7. Planning Dining and Snacks

Our next step in the Disneyland planning guide is all about dining. One of the most delightful aspects of visiting Disneyland is indulging in the delicious dining options and delectable snacks throughout the parks. Some of the most popular dining experiences at Disneyland require reservations. Guests can make dining reservations 60 days in advance on the Disneyland website or the Disneyland app. Do some research and figure out what restaurants you’d like to eat at and if a reservation is needed.

Disneyland Dining Options (What to Expect + Tips)

Disneyland has so many great food options, and planning ahead just a little can save you time, money, and stress during your trip.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the different types of dining you’ll find in the parks.

Quick-Service Restaurants

Quick-service restaurants are the fastest and most convenient option.

These are counter-service locations where you can grab things like burgers, sandwiches, salads, and more. They’re perfect if you want to eat quickly and get back to rides.

👉 If you want help deciding where to eat, I’ve put together guides to the best quick-service restaurants in both Disneyland and California Adventure.

Table-Service Restaurants

Table-service restaurants offer a more relaxed, sit-down dining experience with full menus and waitstaff.

These meals are great if you want a break in the middle of the day or a more memorable dining experience. Many of these locations are themed and really fun.

Reservations open 60 days in advance, and popular spots can book up quickly.

👉 If you’re having trouble getting a reservation, services like Mouse Dining can alert you when one becomes available.

Character Dining

Character dining is a fun way to meet Disney characters without waiting in long lines.

These meals take place in select restaurants, where characters come to your table while you eat. It’s especially popular for families and can be a really memorable part of your trip.

👉 I break down all the options and what to expect in my full character dining guide.

Snacks and Treats

One of the best parts of Disneyland is the snacks.

You’ll find carts and stands all over the parks serving things like churros, popcorn, pretzels, and seasonal treats. It’s worth leaving a little room in your budget to try a few fun snacks throughout the day. Here’s my list of the 30 best snacks and treats at Disneyland.

Bringing Your Own Food

One of the easiest ways to save money at Disneyland is to bring your own food.

Disneyland allows you to bring in snacks, drinks, and even full meals, which can be a huge help for families or longer park days.

👉 You can check out my full guide on what you can bring into Disneyland for all the details.

Now it’s time to put everything together and map out your actual park days.

How to Plan Your Disneyland Days (Simple Strategy That Works)

Once you’ve booked your tickets and hotel, it’s time to make a basic plan for each day.

And don’t worry, this doesn’t mean scheduling every minute.

You don’t need a super detailed itinerary to have a great trip. But having a simple plan in place will help you avoid wasting time and make sure you hit everything that matters most to you.

Start With Your Priorities

Before your trip, take a little time to think about what’s most important to your group.

  • Which rides are must-do attractions?
  • Are there characters you want to meet?
  • Any shows or entertainment you don’t want to miss?

👉 I also have a ride guide with height requirements that can help you narrow this down, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

Once you know your priorities, you can start shaping your day around them.

Map Out a Simple Game Plan

The biggest mistake I see people make is showing up without a plan and then trying to figure it out in the moment.

Instead, go in with a rough outline:

  • what you’ll do first when you arrive
  • where you’ll head next
  • when you’ll take breaks or eat

You can use the Disneyland app to get familiar with the park layout ahead of time so you’re not wasting time trying to figure out where to go.

How to Maximize Your Time

A few simple strategies can make a huge difference in how much you get done in a day:

  • Start early to take advantage of lower crowds in the morning

If you really want to maximize your mornings, rope drop is one of the most powerful strategies you can use.

Rope drop means arriving before the park opens so you can be one of the first people on the most popular rides with little to no wait.

👉 I break down exactly how to do this step-by-step in my rope drop cheat sheet, including which rides to prioritize first depending on which park you’re in.

  • Use Lightning Lane strategically to skip long lines
  • Take breaks in the afternoon when crowds are at their highest
  • Use a clear plan for your day so you’re not wasting time deciding what to do next.

These small decisions add up and can easily save you hours of waiting.

Want It All Planned Out For You?

If you don’t want to figure all of this out on your own, this is exactly what my Disneyland planning guides are designed for.

It includes step-by-step touring plans, Lightning Lane strategies, and exactly what to do throughout your day so you can ride more, wait less, and avoid the stress of trying to plan everything yourself.

What to Pack for Disneyland (Must-Haves + Tips)

Packing for Disneyland might seem simple, but having the right things with you can make a huge difference in how your day goes.

You’ll be walking a lot, dealing with changing weather, and spending long hours in the parks, so being prepared helps you stay comfortable and avoid unnecessary stress.

Park Day Essentials

Here are a few basics you’ll want to make sure you have:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Weather-appropriate clothing (layers are key)
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Portable phone charger
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Snacks

Having a well-stocked park bag means you won’t have to stop and buy things throughout the day, which can save both time and money.

Save Money by Packing Ahead

Disneyland has everything you might need, but it comes at a premium price.

I like to grab a few essentials ahead of time so I’m not overpaying in the parks. Things like ponchos, sunscreen, portable chargers, and snacks are much cheaper if you bring them with you.

👉 I’ve put together a list of what to buy on Amazon before your Disney trip to help you prepare.

✨ Want a Done-For-You Packing List?

If you don’t want to worry about forgetting anything, my Disneyland planning guide includes a complete packing list, park bag checklist, and everything you need so you don’t forget anything important

Final Disneyland Tips (Before You Go)

Before you head out on your trip, here are a few final tips to keep in mind.

The biggest one? Don’t overthink it.

You’ve done the work. You’ve planned ahead. Now it’s time to enjoy it.

Have a plan, but be flexible. Some of the best moments at Disneyland happen when you slow down, take it all in, and just enjoy being there.

A Few Final Tips

  • Start your day early to take advantage of lower crowds
  • Take breaks when you need them
  • Stay flexible if plans change
  • Don’t try to do everything in one trip

And most importantly, focus on what matters most to you and your group.

✨ Want Everything Laid Out For You?
