Now, 70 years later, fans love celebrating Disneyland’s birthday by reliving a bit of that history—and one of the best ways to do that is with the Opening Day Ride Challenge! What Really Happened on Opening Day At Disneyland?

Let’s just say—it was magical… but messy.

Opening day at Disneyland was Sunday, July 17, 1955, it was supposed to be a controlled, invitation-only event for around 15,000 guests. But thanks to counterfeit tickets and some clever guests climbing fences or sneaking in behind delivery trucks, more than 28,000 people flooded into the park.

The entire event was broadcast live on ABC with an audience of over 90 million viewers, hosted by Art Linkletter, Bob Cummings, and Ronald Reagan. While the broadcast made it look magical, what was happening behind the scenes told a very different story.

The asphalt on Main Street had been poured just the night before and hadn’t fully set. Women’s high heels stuck in the pavement as they walked. There weren’t enough drinking fountains due to a plumber strike (which led to rumors that Disney intentionally removed them to boost soda sales—Walt denied this). Rides broke down throughout the day, including the Dumbo ride, which didn’t even operate, and the Mark Twain Riverboat, which nearly sank from being overloaded with passengers.

Restaurants ran out of food, lines were long and unorganized, and bathroom facilities were overwhelmed. Walt Disney later referred to it as a “nightmare”, and cast members dubbed it “Black Sunday.”

Despite all the issues, the guests were thrilled just to be there. The park had an undeniable charm, and Walt’s vision of a magical place where families could have fun together still managed to shine through the chaos.

But once Disneyland officially opened to the public on Monday, July 18, everything began to run much more smoothly. Over time, the success of Disneyland would inspire parks around the world—but there was only ever one Opening Day at Disneyland, and it was as legendary for its mishaps as it was for its magic.

The Opening Day Ride Challenge is a fun way to experience Disneyland the way guests did on its very first day: by riding every attraction that was operating on July 17, 1955.
