I wanted a real answer, so my friends and I tested it. One of us started at 8AM, one started at 9AM and one started at 10AM. We followed the same ride list in the same order and tracked what happened along the way. Then we repeated the entire experiment at Disney California Adventure because the two parks do not always behave the same way.

The results were honestly more interesting than I expected. Before you set your alarm for a truly offensive hour, here is what you need to know about choosing the best Disneyland arrival time for your family.

What Time Should You Arrive at Disneyland?

The quick answer is that an 8AM start gives you the best opportunity to take advantage of lower morning wait times. But that does not mean everyone needs to arrive at 8AM, and it definitely does not mean your day is ruined if you start later.

• Arrive for an 8AM start if riding as much as possible is your top priority, you only have one park day or you want to tackle popular attractions before the afternoon crowds arrive.
• Arrive around 9AM if you want a more balanced morning and are comfortable being a little more selective with your ride list.
• Arrive around 10AM if your family does better with a slower morning, you plan to stay late or you care more about the overall experience than fitting in the maximum number of attractions.

The best arrival time is not automatically the earliest one. It is the earliest time your group can realistically handle without starting the day exhausted and grumpy. An 8AM arrival is not very magical if everyone is already falling apart by lunchtime.

What Does an 8AM Disneyland Start Actually Mean?

When I say “start at 8AM,” I mean being inside the park and ready to begin when it officially opens. I do not mean pulling into the parking structure at 8AM.

Parking, security, the tram or walking from your hotel and the entrance lines all take time. For an 8AM park opening, I generally recommend arriving at security about an hour early. That gives you time to get through the gates, use the restroom if needed and make your way toward your first attraction without feeling rushed.

We Tested 8AM vs 9AM vs 10AM at Disneyland

For our Disneyland test, I started at 8AM and my friends began at 9AM and 10AM. We used the same ride list and followed the same order so we could see what each person actually encountered after entering the park.

This was much more helpful than simply looking at a wait-time screenshot. A posted wait can change while you are walking across the park, an attraction can temporarily close and one unexpectedly long line can affect everything that comes after it. We wanted to see how the entire morning unfolded in real life.

As you watch, pay attention to more than the final ride count. Notice how quickly the standby waits begin to build, which attractions create the biggest delays and whether the earlier start keeps its advantage throughout the test. Those details are what will help you plan your own morning.

Then We Repeated the Test at California Adventure

After testing Disneyland, we had to try the same experiment at Disney California Adventure. DCA has a smaller attraction lineup, and a few popular rides can have a huge effect on the flow of your morning. I did not want to assume that the Disneyland results would apply to both parks.

We once again tested 8AM, 9AM and 10AM starts using the same basic method. The results surprised us even more the second time.

Is a 9AM Disneyland Arrival Too Late?

No. You will miss part of the quietest morning window, but 9AM is not what I would consider a late start. You can still have an excellent day, especially if you know which attractions matter most and avoid wandering around trying to decide what to do first.

A 9AM start can be a great compromise for families who want some morning advantage without getting everyone out the door before sunrise. It can also make sense if you plan to stay through nighttime entertainment and know that your group cannot comfortably do an extremely long park day.

Can You Still Have a Good Disneyland Day Starting at 10AM?

Absolutely. You just need to plan a different kind of day. By 10AM, more guests have entered the parks and the lowest standby waits may be disappearing. That means you will need to prioritize, watch current wait times and be willing to adjust your ride order.

A 10AM arrival may actually be the better choice if your family wants to stay until closing, has young kids who need a normal morning or is visiting for several days. You may accomplish less before lunch, but that does not automatically make it a worse day.

Does Lightning Lane Make Arrival Time Less Important?

Lightning Lane Multi Pass can help you work around longer standby waits, but it does not make your arrival time irrelevant. Return-time availability, attraction closures and the priorities you choose can all change the day. The first few hours still matter, especially if you are trying to combine standby rides with Lightning Lane reservations.

How to Choose the Best Arrival Time for Your Family

Before choosing a start time, ask yourself these questions:

• Is this your only day at the park?
• Are rides your top priority?
• Do you want to stay through nighttime entertainment?
• Can everyone in your group realistically handle a very early morning?
• Are you visiting for one day or several?
• Will you use Lightning Lane Multi Pass?

If this is your only Disneyland day and you want to fit in as much as possible, I would make the effort to be there for the 8AM opening. If you have multiple days or a group that needs more sleep, a 9AM or 10AM start can be a perfectly reasonable tradeoff.

The important thing is to choose intentionally. Do not accidentally lose your morning because nobody checked how long parking and security would take. But do not force a rope-drop morning that makes the rest of the day miserable either.

So, does it really matter what time you arrive at Disneyland? Yes, your start time can change the way your morning unfolds. But the “best” arrival time is not exactly the same for every family.

Watch the Disneyland and California Adventure tests before your trip, decide what matters most to your group and choose the earliest start time that still lets everyone enjoy the day. That is a much better plan than setting a painfully early alarm just because someone on the internet told you to. Even if that someone is me.

Is California Adventure a Full-Day Park?

My honest answer? For most first-time visitors, I’d give DCA a full day. There is more to do than people realize, and racing through just to say you finished in half a day misses a lot of what makes this park fun.

DCA does have fewer attractions than Disneyland Park, but that doesn’t mean it feels empty. Popular rides can have long waits, the food is worth slowing down for, and characters, shows and seasonal entertainment all take time. Plus, Cars Land is completely different after dark. I hate seeing people leave before the neon comes on!

I can happily spend an entire day here. Not everyone needs to, but DCA should not automatically be treated as the park you squeeze in only after you finish Disneyland.

Who Should Plan a Full Day at California Adventure?

Families With Younger Kids

With little kids, everything takes a little longer, and that’s okay. Bathroom breaks, snacks, stroller time and repeat rides all add up. My best advice is to build in breathing room instead of planning every minute.

There are plenty of family-friendly attractions at DCA, including The Little Mermaid, Monsters, Inc., Toy Story Midway Mania, Jessie’s Critter Carousel, Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree and Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters. Add character experiences and Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, and a day fills up quickly.

Guests Who Want to Ride Most Attractions

If your goal is to ride most of the attractions, give yourself the whole day. Radiator Springs Racers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Toy Story Midway Mania, WEB SLINGERS, Soarin’ and Incredicoaster can eat up a surprising amount of time when the waits are high.

Even with a great plan, you still have walking time, the actual ride time and the occasional closure to deal with. A little wiggle room makes the day so much more enjoyable.

Anyone Who Wants Shows, Characters and a Sit-Down Meal

This is where the half-day math falls apart. People count the rides and forget about everything else.

If you want to see entertainment, meet characters, explore the lands or sit down for a meal, plan time for it. Lamplight Lounge, Carthay Circle and Wine Country Trattoria are part of the experience, not quick five-minute stops between rides.

Seasonal festivals can fill even more of your day. Food & Wine Festival, Lunar New Year, Halloween Time and Festival of Holidays add special food, entertainment and activities throughout the park.

First-Time Visitors

If this is your first visit, I really do recommend the full day if your ticket allows it. You’ll want time to look around, learn the layout and figure out what your family enjoys. Trying to squeeze a brand-new park into a few rushed hours is usually more stressful than magical.

Who Can Do California Adventure in Half a Day?

A half day can work really well for adults, teens and repeat visitors who move quickly and have a short priority list. If you only want the major rides, decide on your order before you arrive and skip anything your group doesn’t care about.

For example, a thrill-focused group might prioritize Guardians of the Galaxy, Radiator Springs Racers, Incredicoaster, Soarin’ and WEB SLINGERS. With an early start, Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Rider where available, you can cover a lot in several hours.

Half a day is also great for frequent visitors who already know what they like. If you only want a few rides, a meal and Cars Land at night, there is no reason to force yourself into an open-to-close day.

How Long Do You Need at California Adventure?

• Four to six hours: Enough for a focused group doing a handful of major rides.
• Six to eight hours: A solid visit with several attractions, food and time to enjoy the park.
• A full day: Best for first-time visitors, families with younger kids and anyone who wants most rides, entertainment, characters and a relaxed meal.

Think of these as a starting point, not a rule. Every family moves at a different pace. I care much more about you enjoying your day than checking off the maximum number of rides in the fewest possible hours.

Does Lightning Lane Make DCA a Half-Day Park?

Lightning Lane Multi Pass can save you a ton of time, but it doesn’t magically turn DCA into a half-day park. Return times may not line up perfectly with your plan, and some attractions don’t use Multi Pass.

Radiator Springs Racers uses Lightning Lane Single Pass, which is purchased separately. Single Rider can also be helpful if everyone in your group is at least seven and you do not mind riding separately.

A Simple Full-Day California Adventure Plan

I like to be at security 45 to 60 minutes before the park opens. That lets me use the lower morning waits for priority attractions and slow down a little once the park gets busier.

1. Morning: Start with Guardians of the Galaxy or head toward Pixar Pier for Incredicoaster, Toy Story Midway Mania and Goofy’s Sky School.
2. Late morning: Explore Avengers Campus, Cars Land or Grizzly Peak based on your group’s priorities.
3. Afternoon: Have lunch, see a show, meet characters and use Lightning Lane return times while standby waits are higher.
4. Evening: Return to anything you missed, enjoy Cars Land after dark and finish with the scheduled nighttime entertainment.

A Simple Half-Day California Adventure Plan

For a half day, keep the plan simple. Pick four or five must-dos, group them by area and don’t crisscross the park every time one wait changes by five minutes.

If you start in the morning, use rope drop for the rides with the biggest payoff. If you visit later, focus on your Lightning Lane return times, use Single Rider when it makes sense and stay long enough to see Cars Land after dark.

Don’t try to squeeze a full-day plan into half the time. That’s how everyone ends up feeling behind.

How Many Days Should You Plan for Disneyland Resort?

For a first trip, I usually recommend at least three park days for the Disneyland Resort. That gives you extra time at Disneyland Park and one solid day at DCA without trying to cram everything into a single exhausting day.

If you only have two days, one day in each park is a simple option. A Park Hopper gives you more flexibility, but it is not required to have a great trip. If you only have one day for both parks, you will need to prioritize aggressively and accept that you will not do everything.

My Final Verdict

My honest verdict? California Adventure can absolutely be a full-day park.

If your group moves quickly and only cares about the headliners, a half day may be enough. If you have younger kids, want to ride most attractions, plan to see entertainment or would like time for a sit-down meal, give DCA the full day.

Don’t let someone else’s touring style decide how much time your family needs. A park is not just a checklist. Plan around the experiences that matter to you and give yourself enough time to actually enjoy them.

Can you do all of California Adventure in one day?

You can experience most of Disney California Adventure in one well-planned day, especially if you arrive early. Doing every attraction, show, character and dining experience is less realistic, so decide what matters most before you arrive.

Is California Adventure worth a full day with young children?

When Is Fall at Disneyland?

Fall does not officially begin until September, but fall at Disneyland starts much earlier. In 2026, Halloween Time runs from August 21 through October 31. Oogie Boogie Bash begins even earlier, with select party nights starting August 18. The holidays officially begin November 18.

That means Disneyland’s fall season really stretches from late August through November, with three distinct experiences:

• Late August through October is Halloween Time.
• Early November is the transition between Halloween and the holidays.
• Beginning November 18, the full holiday season takes over the resort.

The right month depends on whether you care most about Halloween, holiday decorations, weather, crowds or having the most seasonal entertainment available.

Disneyland in the Fall at a Glance

Here is the quick version:

• August is best if you want to experience Halloween Time early and do not mind the heat.
• September offers the full Halloween experience with more weekday options.
• October has the strongest Halloween atmosphere, but it can also attract larger fall break and weekend crowds.
• November is best for cooler weather and the holidays, especially after the official holiday season begins.

My quick answer: September is my pick for the best overall fall month if you want Halloween Time with more weekday options. If the holidays are your priority, visit after November 18.

Now let’s look at what each month is really like.

Visiting Disneyland in August

The first few weeks of August feel like a traditional summer Disneyland trip, and then the resort shifts into Halloween mode. Halloween Time begins August 21 in 2026, bringing the giant Mickey pumpkin, decorations in both parks and seasonal attraction overlays. Haunted Mansion Holiday is also scheduled to return that day.

The biggest drawback is the weather. Average daytime highs are usually in the mid to upper 80s, and the parks can feel even hotter because of the pavement, crowds and long stretches spent outside. If you visit in August, plan to start early, take advantage of indoor attractions during the hottest part of the afternoon and drink more water than you think you need.

Pay attention to attraction closures too. Haunted Mansion generally closes before Halloween Time so Disney can install its holiday overlay.

August is best for guests who want to experience Halloween Time early, enjoy warmer days and plan to use their hotel pool or take an afternoon break. The drawback is that you can get summer weather and fall crowds at the same time, especially around the Halloween kickoff.

Visiting Disneyland in September

September is one of my favorite months to visit Disneyland. Halloween Time is in full swing, with more weekday options than you may have during the busiest parts of October.

Do not mistake September for a cool fall month, though. The average high is around 84 degrees, and Southern California can still have very hot days. Pack for summer temperatures, but bring a light layer for the morning or evening.

September is also filled with Oogie Boogie Bash dates. The separately ticketed Halloween party takes place at Disney California Adventure from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on select nights. Party guests can enter DCA beginning at 3:00 p.m.

On Oogie Boogie Bash nights, Disney California Adventure closes to regular daytime guests at 6:00 p.m. That can push more guests toward Disneyland in the late afternoon and evening, so check party dates before choosing your park reservations.

September is best for guests who want the complete Halloween experience, can visit on weekdays and do not mind hot weather. The drawback is that Oogie Boogie Bash can complicate your park schedule if you do not plan for it.

Visiting Disneyland in October

If you want the strongest possible Halloween atmosphere, October is probably the month you are picturing.

The decorations are up, the seasonal attraction overlays are running, Halloween foods are available and Oogie Boogie Bash continues on select nights. October feels fully committed to Halloween from the moment you walk through the gates.

The weather usually begins cooling down, with an average high around 77 degrees and an average low around 61 degrees. However, October can still surprise you with a heat wave. I would pack for warm afternoons and cooler evenings rather than assuming you will have traditional sweater weather.

Fall breaks, long weekends and the popularity of Halloween Time can all affect crowds. The closer you get to Halloween, the more demand you may see for hotels, park reservations and party tickets.

October is best for guests who want maximum Halloween atmosphere and love seasonal food, decorations and attraction overlays. The drawback is that you may pay more or encounter heavier crowds for many of the same offerings available in September.

Visiting Disneyland in November

November is the most complicated fall month because the experience changes dramatically depending on your dates. Halloween Time ends October 31, and the full holiday season begins November 13 in 2026. During the first half of November, you may see decorations appearing, but you should not expect every holiday attraction, show, food item and entertainment offering to be available.

Once the holidays officially begin, expect festive decorations, attraction overlays, A Christmas Fantasy Parade, “Believe…In Holiday Magic” fireworks, Disney Festival of Holidays and seasonal food.

November also brings much more comfortable weather. The average high is around 71 degrees, with an average low around 56 degrees. Mornings and evenings can feel chilly, so layers are important.

Crowds often build as the month continues. The holiday kickoff attracts guests, and Thanksgiving week can be extremely busy.

November is best for guests who prefer cooler park days and want holiday food, decorations and entertainment. The drawback is the early-November transition. If the full holiday experience matters to you, schedule your trip after November 13.

Halloween Time, Oogie Boogie Bash and the Holidays

Seasonal entertainment is one of the biggest reasons to visit Disneyland in the fall. It helps to know what is included with regular admission and what requires another ticket.

Halloween Time at Disneyland

Halloween Time is included with regular park admission. Disneyland Park has the Main Street Mickey pumpkin, Halloween characters, Haunted Mansion Holiday and Halloween Screams. Disney California Adventure has its own decorations, Cars Land transformations and seasonal attractions. You do not need an Oogie Boogie Bash ticket to enjoy these general Halloween offerings.

Oogie Boogie Bash

Oogie Boogie Bash is a separately ticketed party at Disney California Adventure on select nights in August, September and October. In 2026, it runs from 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., with party ticket holders allowed to enter DCA at 3:00 p.m. Even if you are not attending, check the party calendar because these dates affect DCA’s hours and evening crowd patterns.

Holidays at Disneyland

The holidays officially begin November 13 in 2026. The celebration includes “it’s a small world” Holiday, Haunted Mansion Holiday, A Christmas Fantasy Parade, holiday fireworks and Disney Festival of Holidays. If you want the complete experience, visit after the official start date.

Disneyland Fall Weather and What to Pack

One of the biggest Disneyland fall mistakes is packing for the season you imagine instead of the weather Anaheim is actually having.

August and September can be hot. October can be warm during the day and cool after dark. November is usually mild, but mornings and evenings can feel chilly, and rain is possible.

For most fall trips, I recommend packing:

• Comfortable walking shoes
• Lightweight, breathable clothes
• A sweatshirt or light jacket
• Sunscreen
• A hat or sunglasses
• A refillable water bottle
• A portable fan for warmer months
• A poncho or compact rain jacket if rain is in the forecast
• A portable phone charger

Layers are the answer. You do not want to carry a heavy coat all day, but you also do not want to buy an expensive sweatshirt because the temperature dropped after sunset.

Fall Crowds, Closures and Planning Tips

Fall crowds at Disneyland are not as simple as “September is quiet” or “October is busy.” Crowd patterns can change based on ticket prices, school calendars, Magic Key availability, special events, weather and attraction closures.

My 2026 Disneyland crowd calendar provides a month-by-month overview, but remember that every crowd calendar is still a forecast rather than a guarantee.

These are the dates and situations I watch most closely:

• The opening weekend of Halloween Time
• Oogie Boogie Bash dates
• Fridays and weekends during Halloween Time
• School fall breaks and long weekends
• The days immediately surrounding Halloween
• The holiday season opening
• Veterans Day
• Thanksgiving week

Seasonal attraction overlays can also create temporary closures. Haunted Mansion closes before Halloween Time so it can become Haunted Mansion Holiday. “it’s a small world” may close before the holiday season while its overlay is installed. Always check the official Disneyland calendar as your trip gets closer.

No crowd calendar can guarantee a quiet day, which is why I care so much about having a good park strategy. Arriving early, understanding Lightning Lane Multi Pass and knowing which attractions build the longest waits can make a much bigger difference than trying to find one magically empty date.

Where to Stay for a Fall Disneyland Trip

Where you stay at Disneyland in the fall can make a big difference when afternoons are hot or party nights change your schedule. I usually prefer a hotel within walking distance because it makes early mornings, afternoon breaks and late nights easier. In August and September, a great pool can also feel like part of the vacation.

Compare the actual walk to the entrance along with the room price, parking, breakfast, shuttle service, room size and family-friendly amenities.

Yes! Disneyland in the fall is a great time to visit. Especially if you love seasonal decorations and entertainment. Choose late August or September for early Halloween fun, October for the strongest Halloween atmosphere or November after the holiday kickoff for cooler weather and Christmas at Disneyland.

I would not choose a month based only on which one is supposedly the least crowded. Pick the experience that matters most, avoid the biggest holiday weeks when possible and go into the parks with a solid plan.

You walk past a ride and it says 20 minutes. You come back an hour later and it says 55. Then, just when you assume the line will stay long for the rest of the day, it drops again.

But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: Disneyland wait times are not random, and they do not rise the same way for every attraction.

Some rides build a long line almost immediately. Some stay pretty steady all afternoon. Others become much easier late at night.

I pulled the 2026 hourly posted-wait averages for 34 Disneyland attractions and organized them into one simple printable pack. It includes an overview of the biggest rides, plus charts for every Disneyland land, so you can quickly see what is usually worth riding early and what can wait until later.

This is not a rigid touring plan. It’s a tool that helps you make better decisions and spend less of your expensive park day standing in line.

When Are Disneyland Wait Times the Shortest?

The quick answer is that Disneyland wait times are usually lowest during the first hour after park opening and again during the final few hours of the night.

Late morning through early evening is generally the hardest part of the day for standby lines. That does not mean you should stop riding attractions. It means you need to be more selective.

The biggest early-morning advantages in this data show up at attractions like:

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Matterhorn Bobsleds

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Space Mountain

Indiana Jones Adventure

But there are exceptions, and this is exactly why I wanted to make these charts.

Peter Pan’s Flight, for example, does not have the dramatic rope-drop advantage people expect. Its line is already fairly long early in the morning, and its best typical window is late at night. Rise of the Resistance also improves later. I always save that attraction for later in the evening to avoid the longest wait times.

The goal is not to do every popular ride first. You only get one first hour. Pick the morning priority that matters most to your family, then use the rest of the chart to decide what can wait.

How To Read the Disneyland Wait Time Charts

Each number on the printable is a typical posted wait in minutes for that hour of the day.

The colors make the patterns easier to see:

Green means one of that attraction’s shortest typical windows.

Yellow means a relatively good time for that attraction.

Orange means the wait is getting busy.

Red means one of that attraction’s longest typical windows.

Here is the most important rule: compare each attraction with itself, not with another ride.

A green 30-minute wait for one attraction can still be longer than a red 15-minute wait for another. The color is showing you where that ride falls within its own day.

You will also see a few blank gray cells. Those mean the attraction is normally closed or has limited operating hours during that part of the day. Rise of the Resistance typically closes before the rest of Disneyland, and daytime experiences like Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes and some Rivers of America attractions may finish much earlier.

Always check the Disneyland app for that day’s hours, current waits and closures.

Does Disneyland Inflate Wait Times?

This is one of the questions I get asked the most.

In my experience, yes, Disneyland’s posted wait times often run higher than the amount of time you actually spend in line.

I have tested this over and over again on different attractions and at different times of day. On average, I have found that the actual standby wait is about 10 minutes shorter than the posted wait.

But late at night? The difference can be much bigger.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad might show a 40-minute posted wait around 10 PM, but the actual line could be closer to 10 minutes. I have seen this happen many times, and it is one of the reasons I do not automatically walk away from a ride just because the number on the app looks high near closing.

That does not mean every posted 40-minute wait will really be 10 minutes. Ride capacity, downtime, Lightning Lane demand and crowd movement can change a line very quickly.

Think of the posted wait as an estimate, not a stopwatch.

My approach is simple:

Use the historical chart to understand the usual pattern.

Use the live Disneyland app to compare your options.

Remember that the actual standby wait may be shorter, especially late at night.

If the ride is important to you and it is still operating, do not let one intimidating number make the decision for you.

How I Built This Disneyland Wait Times Guide

The charts use 2026 year-to-date historical posted wait-time averages from Queue-Times.com, refreshed July 2026.

I used the overall average posted wait for each hour from 8 AM through 11 PM. Then I organized the attractions by land and added a color scale that compares every ride with its own daily pattern.

These numbers are planning averages. They are not a guarantee of what you will see on your exact park day.

Holiday crowds, attraction refurbishments, temporary downtime, weather, special events and park hours can all change the pattern. That is why the printable and the live app work best together.

The chart gives you a smart starting plan. The app helps you adjust when real life happens.

Best Times To Ride Popular Disneyland Attractions

Here are the biggest takeaways for the attractions most families ask me about.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Rise of the Resistance stays busy for most of the day. In this data, the typical posted wait is 51 minutes at 8 AM and rises into the low-to-mid 60s by late morning.

The line improves in the evening, reaching the mid-40s around 9–10 PM. However, Rise normally closes around 10 PM, so there is no 11 PM recommendation on the chart.

If Rise is a must-do, I would save it for the end of the night and get in line for it just before it closes. Remember, it closes a couple hours earlier than the park itself. So check the closing time on the Disneyland app!

If you are in line for the attraction before it closes, you can still ride it. Once the ride is officially closed there is no longer a lighting lane and they are just running the standby line, so the queue moves really quickly. I usually wait 20 minutes or less when use this strategy.

Space Mountain

Space Mountain is one of the strongest rope-drop choices in Disneyland.

The typical posted wait is 35 minutes at 8 AM and 39 minutes at 9 AM. By 10 AM it jumps to 49 minutes, and it stays around 50–60 minutes for most of the day.

Your best choices are the opening hour or the very end of the night. If Space Mountain is a family priority, I would not casually save it for the afternoon.

Indiana Jones Adventure

Indiana Jones has a clear early and late pattern.

The typical posted wait is 27 minutes at 8 AM, then rises into the 40s by late morning. It returns to the 30s during the final evening hours and averages 27 minutes again at 11 PM.

Indiana Jones also experiences downtime fairly often, so I like riding it early if it is one of my top priorities. If it is operating smoothly late at night, that can be another excellent opportunity.

Peter Pan’s Flight

Peter Pan is the attraction that surprises people most.

The wait is already about 34 minutes at 8 AM, and it stays in the low 30s for most of the day. It finally drops into the 20s during the last few hours, reaching a typical 23-minute posted wait at 11 PM.

Unless Peter Pan is your family’s number-one ride, I would not use your most valuable rope-drop minutes here. Save it for late evening and use the morning for something with a bigger payoff.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

Tiana’s has one of the most dramatic wait-time swings in Disneyland.

The typical posted wait is only 5 minutes at 8 AM and 8 minutes at 9 AM. By noon it is around 45 minutes, and it reaches the low-to-mid 50s during the afternoon.

The wait times dramatically decrease after the sun goes down. You will get wet on this ride and many people aren’t interested in getting wet later in the day, especially after dark!

The line improves again at night, but the opening advantage is hard to beat. If Tiana’s is important to you, it is an excellent first-ride choice.

Matterhorn Bobsleds

Matterhorn is another attraction that rewards an early start.

The typical posted wait is 13 minutes at 8 AM, climbs to 35 minutes by 10 AM and reaches about 45 minutes during the afternoon. It becomes easier late at night, with a typical 18-minute wait at 11 PM.

Ride it early, ride it very late or use Single Rider if that option works for your group.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Runaway Railway changes quickly after opening.

The typical posted wait is 6 minutes at 8 AM and 16 minutes at 9 AM. By 10 AM it is already around 32 minutes, and it stays near 40 minutes for much of the afternoon.

The wait drops again after 9 PM. If you are heading to Mickey’s Toontown early, this should usually be your first stop.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder is usually easiest at the beginning and end of the day.

The typical posted wait is 15 minutes at 8 AM, compared with roughly 37–40 minutes through much of the afternoon. The chart shows 20 minutes at 11 PM, and my late-night testing often finds the actual wait much shorter than the posted number.

Big Thunder at night is also one of my favorite Disneyland experiences. The shorter line is just a bonus.

Haunted Mansion

Haunted Mansion starts around 14 minutes at 8 AM, rises into the upper 30s by midday and returns to about 14 minutes at 11 PM.

This is a wonderfully flexible attraction. Ride it early if you are already on the west side of the park, or save it for late evening when the entire area feels extra atmospheric.

Seasonal overlays and special events can change this attraction’s normal pattern, so check the live wait before walking across the park.

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

Smugglers Run is easiest right after opening and late at night.

The typical posted wait is 9 minutes at 8 AM, rises into the mid-30s during the afternoon and drops to about 15 minutes at 11 PM.

Single Rider can also save time, but your party may be split up and you do not get to choose your positions. I use it when riding together is less important than getting on quickly.

Disneyland Wait Times by Land

You do not want to spend your entire day zigzagging across Disneyland. Looking at the park land by land makes it much easier to build a plan that is efficient and realistic.

Adventureland and Frontierland

Indiana Jones and Big Thunder are the attractions that deserve the most attention here.

Both are strong morning choices. You can easily do both of them in the first hour if you’re there for rope drop. Choose the one your family cares about most to ride first!

Jungle Cruise becomes easier again in the evening. Mark Twain Riverboat and Pirate’s Lair are usually low-wait experiences, but they also operate more limited hours. Do not save those daytime experiences for the end of the night.

New Orleans Square and Bayou Country

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is the clear morning priority in this part of the park. Its wait climbs much faster than Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion or The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

Pirates and Winnie the Pooh are especially flexible. Their waits are usually easier early and late, but neither one needs to take your first ride of the morning.

Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes operate limited daytime hours. If the canoes are on your list, check the schedule instead of assuming you can return later.

Fantasyland

Fantasyland has more attractions packed into a small area than anywhere else in Disneyland. That makes it perfect for an efficient morning sweep.

Matterhorn has the biggest early advantage. Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo also build quickly. The classic dark rides rise more gradually, which means you can often move through several of them without walking very far.

Peter Pan is the exception. Its line begins long and stays fairly steady, so I prefer saving it for late evening unless it is your top priority.

If you are visiting with young children, Fantasyland may matter more to your family than the park’s biggest thrill rides. That is completely fine. The best plan is the one built around your priorities, not someone else’s checklist.

Tomorrowland

Space Mountain is the obvious first choice in Tomorrowland.

Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Star Tours, Astro Orbitor, Autopia and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage all build through the morning, but none has the same early payoff as Space Mountain.

The Disneyland Monorail has a much flatter pattern. Use it when it fits your location and schedule instead of trying to force it into a specific hour.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Galaxy’s Edge only has two major ride queues, but timing still matters.

Rise of the Resistance remains busy all day and closes earlier than the park. Smugglers Run has a much more forgiving late-night drop and offers Single Rider.

If both rides are priorities, I would protect hit Rise right before it closed for the day and then go on Smugglers Run to get the shortest wait times for both attractions.

Mickey’s Toontown

Runaway Railway and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin both rise sharply after opening. GADGETcoaster is usually the easiest of the three rides.

Toontown attractions may pause around fireworks, and those operating details can vary. Check the app before walking over in the evening. When the land reopens, late-night waits can be excellent.

How To Build Your Disneyland Day Around Wait-Time Patterns

You do not need a minute-by-minute schedule to use this information.

Here is the simple framework I recommend.

Before Park Opening

Choose a few rides that matters most to your group.

Know where you are going at rope drop so you do not waste the lowest-wait part of the day standing on Main Street debating your options.

During the First Two Hours

Stay focused on attractions with the biggest early advantage.

Once you finish your first priority, look for nearby green and yellow windows instead of crisscrossing the entire park. A slightly longer line nearby may be a better choice than losing 20 minutes walking to a shorter line on the opposite side of Disneyland.

During the Afternoon

Expect longer standby waits. This is normal.

Use the afternoon for:

Lightning Lane return times

Lower-wait attractions

Shows and entertainment

Meals and snacks

Shopping

A hotel or rest break if you need one

You are not failing because the park is busy. You are adjusting to the part of the day when crowds are usually highest.

After Dinner

Start watching the live waits again.

Families begin leaving, nighttime entertainment draws people away from attractions and some lines slowly improve. This is a good time to reposition yourself near the land where you want to finish the night.

During the Final Two Hours

This is one of the most valuable parts of a Disneyland day.

Peter Pan, Indiana Jones, Haunted Mansion, Smugglers Run, Big Thunder and many other attractions can become much easier late at night.

Remember that posted waits may still look high, but Disneyland inflates them especially later in the evening. If an attraction is open and important to you, the final hours are often worth a chance.

How Lightning Lane Fits Into This Strategy

These charts are helpful whether or not you purchase Lightning Lane.

If you are using Lightning Lane Multi Pass, use the chart to decide which rides are worth booking and which are easy enough to ride through standby.

For example, a Lightning Lane return during a red standby window can save more time than using it during a green window. Meanwhile, naturally short rides and attractions that drop late may not need Lightning Lane at all.

Rise of the Resistance is currently a Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction rather than part of Multi Pass.

The goal is not to use Lightning Lane randomly. It is to combine it with good standby timing so every choice saves you as much time as possible.

2. Skip Park Hopping (It’s Not Worth It with Little Kids)

I know it can be tempting to add the Park Hopper option… but when you’re visiting Disneyland with babies and toddlers, it’s usually not worth it.

Park hopping costs extra, and more importantly, it takes extra time and energy—two things you don’t have a lot of with little kids.

Between packing up your stroller, navigating the esplanade, and getting everyone settled again, it can turn into more of a hassle than it’s worth.

The good news? You really don’t need it.

There is so much to do in both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure that you can easily fill an entire day in each park—and still not get to everything.

You’ll have a much more relaxed and enjoyable trip if you stick to one park per day and take things at a slower pace.

3. Stay Within Walking Distance (This Makes Everything Easier)

If you’re visiting Disneyland with babies or toddlers, this is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make—and it can completely change your trip.

I highly recommend staying within walking distance of the parks, especially somewhere right across Harbor Blvd.

Being able to walk back to your hotel for naps, breaks, or an early bedtime is a total game-changer. You don’t have to worry about shuttles, long waits, or keeping a tired toddler together at the end of the night.

And if you’ve ever had to fold up a stroller, carry your bags, and juggle a sleeping child just to get on transportation… you already know

When you stay close, you can just roll your stroller straight to the gates and back again. It makes the whole day feel so much easier.

4. Make a Simple Plan (It Makes the Day So Much Easier)

You don’t need a minute-by-minute itinerary… but having a basic plan will make your day so much easier.

Before you go, take a few minutes to think through what matters most to your family.

What time do you want to arrive?
What rides are at the top of your list?
Do you want to meet any characters?
Where do you want to eat?
Will you take a midday break?

Even a loose plan like this will save you time, reduce stress, and help you avoid that overwhelmed “what do we do next?” feeling in the parks.

If you have the option to bring grandparents along… do it.

Having an extra set of hands at Disneyland with babies and toddlers can make a huge difference. It gives you more flexibility throughout the day and takes a lot of the pressure off.

Grandparents can stay back with a sleeping baby, take a toddler on slower rides, or just give you a little break while you take older kids on attractions with height requirements.

It also makes things like Rider Switch so much easier to manage.

And beyond the logistics, this is such a special opportunity.

There’s something really sweet about watching grandparents experience Disneyland with their grandkids—it turns into a trip full of memories for everyone.

6. Introduce Disney Characters Before You Go (It Makes a Big Difference)

Before your trip, spend a little time introducing your kids to Disney characters—it makes meeting them in the parks so much more fun.

When kids recognize the characters, those interactions go from “who is that?” to full-on excitement… and those are the moments you’ll remember.

You can keep it really simple:

• Watch a few favorite Disney movies or shows on Disney+
• Read books with familiar characters
• Show short YouTube clips of character meet-and-greets

Even just a little exposure ahead of time can make a big difference.

It helps your child feel more comfortable, more excited, and way more engaged when they see those characters in real life.

7. Be Prepared (This Saves You So Much Stress)

When you’re visiting Disneyland with babies and toddlers, being prepared can make or break your day.

Having everything you need in your park bag means fewer meltdowns, fewer last-minute purchases, and a much smoother experience overall.

Make sure you pack the basics like:

• Diapers and wipes
• Snacks and drinks
• Sunscreen
• Hand sanitizer
• Bottles or sippy cups
• Anything your child can’t go without for a full day in the parks

Because once you’re inside, it’s a lot harder (and more expensive) to track those things down.

Always pack a change of clothes for your kids… just trust me on this one.

Spills, accidents, water rides, sweaty afternoons—it happens. And when it does, having dry clothes ready to go can save your entire day.

Even just a simple extra outfit in your bag or stroller makes a huge difference.

It’s also a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweatshirt.

Even on warm days, mornings and evenings in Southern California can feel surprisingly chilly—especially for little kids.

9. Know What They Can Ride (There’s More Than You Think!)

One of the best things about Disneyland with babies and toddlers?
There are so many rides they can go on.

Before your trip, it’s really helpful to know which attractions don’t have height requirements so you can plan your day around things your child can actually enjoy.

This helps you avoid disappointment in the moment and keeps your day running smoothly.

If you have a picky baby or toddler, bringing your own food can save you a lot of stress.

Pack a small cooler or bag with things you already know they’ll eat. It’s one of the easiest ways to avoid the struggle of trying to find something in the parks that your child will actually agree to eat.

Because let’s be honest…
you don’t want a hungry toddler who will only eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a very specific brand of bread… with homemade jam

Trust me—been there.

Bringing your own food also helps you save money and keeps snacks on hand for long lines or unexpected meltdowns.

11. Use a Stroller (Even If You Think You Don’t Need One)

If you’re going to Disneyland with a toddler… you need a stroller.

Even if your child is a great walker.
Even if you plan to carry them.
Even if they “never use one at home.”

Disneyland days are long, and little legs get tired fast.

A stroller gives your child a place to rest, nap, and recharge—and it gives you a place to store all your stuff (which, let’s be honest, adds up quickly).

If you have more than one young child, I highly recommend bringing a double stroller. It just makes the day so much easier.

You can rent a stroller at the parks, but I personally prefer bringing my own. It’s more comfortable, you’re already familiar with it, and it usually has better storage.

12. Bring a Stroller Fan and Rain Cover (Weather Happens)

Strollers can get hot—like, way hotter than you’d expect.

On warm days, they can feel like little ovens, especially when there’s not much airflow. A clip-on stroller fan makes a huge difference in keeping your baby or toddler comfortable.

It’s also smart to be prepared for rain.

If there’s even a chance of it in the forecast, bring a waterproof stroller cover. Southern California doesn’t get a ton of rain, but when it does, you’ll be so glad you have it.

Because honestly… nothing is worse than a soaked stroller and a very unhappy kid

13. Bring a Small Cooler (It Makes Snacks So Much Easier)

A small cooler can be a lifesaver when you’re visiting Disneyland with babies and toddlers.

It’s perfect for keeping drinks, bottles, and milk cold—and it also lets you bring snacks that need to stay chilled, like yogurt, applesauce, cheese, or cut fruit.

That gives you way more flexibility throughout the day, especially if your child has favorites they rely on.

I recommend a soft-sided cooler that fits easily under your stroller or in a locker so it’s not bulky or hard to manage.

I found some great cooler options that work really well for the parks.

14. Bring Your Own Snacks (These Save You in Long Lines)

Snacks are a lifesaver at Disneyland—especially when you’re stuck in a long line with a toddler.

Bringing your own snacks saves money and guarantees you always have something on hand that your child will actually eat. Win-win.

I like to pack easy options like:

• Goldfish or crackers
• Dried fruit
• Granola bars
• Snack pouches

One thing to keep in mind—the mess factor.

Whatever you hand them will likely end up on their hands, clothes… and probably the stroller too So I try to stick with snacks that are quick and not too messy when possible.

15. Book a Character Meal (Skip the Lines for Character Time)

If meeting characters is high on your list, a character meal can be a really great option.

Yes, they’re a bit pricey—but you’re paying for convenience.

Instead of waiting in long lines throughout the park, the characters come to you while you’re eating. It’s such an easy, low-stress way for little kids to interact with their favorites.

It’s also a nice built-in break during your day. You get to sit down, cool off, and relax for a bit while still doing something fun.

My personal favorite is Goofy’s Kitchen. It’s fun, lively, and you’ll usually see a great mix of characters.

You can book dining reservations up to 60 days in advance, and I definitely recommend doing that if this is something you want to include in your trip.

16. Rope Drop (This Is the Best Time to Ride Anything)

If you can get to the parks early, do it.

Arriving right when the park opens—what’s called “rope dropping”—is one of the best strategies for avoiding long lines.

And when you’re visiting with babies and toddlers, that makes a huge difference.

During the first hour or two of the day, wait times are usually at their lowest. You can get so much done before the crowds build, which means less waiting, less stress, and happier kids.

It’s the easiest way to knock out a few must-do rides before everyone gets tired.

17. Use Rider Switch (So Everyone Gets to Ride)

If you’re visiting with babies or toddlers, you should absolutely be using Rider Switch.

It’s designed specifically for families like yours—and it’s such a game-changer.

Here’s how it works:

One adult waits with the child who isn’t riding, while the other goes through the line and rides. Then instead of waiting all over again, the second adult gets to ride with little to no wait.

It’s a super easy way for both adults to experience bigger rides without doubling your time in line.

This is especially helpful for popular attractions like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Space Mountain, and Incredicoaster.

And don’t worry—it sounds more complicated than it is.

18. Use the Baby Care Centers (These Are So Helpful)

Each park has a Baby Care Center—and if you’re visiting with babies or toddlers, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of them.

They’re quiet, clean, and fully staffed with Cast Members if you need help with anything. It’s a great place to take a break, cool down, or handle anything that’s just easier to do outside of the crowds.

Here’s what you’ll find inside:

• Nursing rooms with comfortable seating
• Changing rooms with tables
• Toddler-sized toilets (for little ones under 42”)
• Feeding area with high chairs
• Kitchen with a sink, bottle warmers, and microwave (limited use)
• A vending machine with essentials like formula, baby food, diapers, wipes, sunscreen, and more

You can also purchase forgotten essentials here if needed—which can be a real lifesaver.

At Disneyland Park, the Baby Care Center is at the end of Main Street, U.S.A., next to First Aid

19. Visit Favorite Characters Early (Timing Matters)

If your child has a favorite character, make sure you plan time to meet them.

Those character interactions can end up being some of the most special moments of your trip.

But timing makes a big difference.

I recommend meeting characters earlier in the day—before your child gets tired, overwhelmed, or overstimulated. You’ll usually get better interactions, happier photos, and a much smoother experience overall.

If your child loves someone like Mickey Mouse, try to prioritize that early so it doesn’t get missed later in the day.

20. Use Mobile Ordering (Skip the Food Lines)

If you’re not using mobile ordering at Disneyland, you’re missing out.

You can order your food right from the Disneyland app and skip the long lines completely.

When you’re visiting with babies and toddlers, this is a game-changer.

Instead of waiting in line with hungry kids, you can order ahead, walk up when your food is ready, and go straight to finding a table.

It saves time, reduces stress, and makes meals so much easier to manage during a busy park day.

21.Order Toddler Meals (Smaller, Simpler, and Easier)

When you’re ordering food, keep an eye out for toddler or kids’ meals on the menu.

Most quick-service locations offer smaller portions that are much more manageable for little kids—and usually come with simple, familiar options they’re more likely to eat.

You can browse menus ahead of time right in the Disneyland app, which makes it easy to find options before you’re dealing with a hungry toddler in the moment.

These meals are often more affordable too, which is always a bonus.

22. Take a Midday Break (Everyone Will Be Happier)

Taking a break in the middle of the day can make a huge difference when you’re visiting Disneyland with babies and toddlers.

You can head back to your hotel for a nap if that works best for your family, or find a quiet, shady spot in the park and let your little one rest in the stroller.

One of my favorite things to do is hold a sleeping baby while taking a few relaxing loops around Disneyland on the train—it’s such a peaceful break in the middle of a busy day.

However that break looks for you, the goal is the same: give your child some time to rest and reset.

Because a well-rested baby is a much happier baby—and that makes the whole day better for everyone.

23. Catch Some Entertainment (Perfect for Little Kids)

Rides aren’t the only thing to do at Disneyland—there’s some really fun entertainment that’s perfect for babies and toddlers.

These shows and experiences are a great way to take a break from lines while still doing something your kids will love.

One of the best options is the Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! in Disney California Adventure Park. It’s high-energy, interactive, and designed specifically for younger kids—they can dance, move around, and burn off some energy.

Parades are another great option. You don’t have to worry about height requirements, and kids love seeing the characters go by.

You can also check out shows at the Fantasyland Theatre, which are fun for all ages and give everyone a chance to sit down and relax for a bit.

24. Keep Them Entertained in Line (This Helps Avoid Meltdowns)

Waiting in line can be one of the hardest parts of the day for little kids.

Having a few simple distractions on hand can make a huge difference.

I like to bring a couple small toys they can play with, or even a bottle of bubbles—those are always a hit.

Before our trips, I’ll grab a few inexpensive toys from the dollar store. Something new and exciting can go a long way in keeping babies and toddlers happy while you wait.

25. Go with the Flow (This Is the Most Important Tip)

Visiting Disneyland with babies and toddlers can be challenging—especially if you’re trying to create the perfect trip.

But here’s a little secret… there’s no such thing as a perfect Disney vacation.

There will be tears. There will be tantrums. And at some point, you might wonder why you thought this was a good idea

But there will also be so many really special moments.

Moments where your child is completely in awe. Moments that make all the effort worth it. The kind of memories you’ll look back on for years.

The hard parts? Those tend to fade.

The best thing you can do is stay flexible. Make a plan, prepare as much as you can—but once you’re there, let go of the pressure and just go with the flow.

Be present. Soak it all in. And enjoy the magic with your family.

Rope Drop – Maximize the First Hour

Rope drop means entering the park right when it officially opens. It’s not just about being early—it’s about being strategic. Rope dropping is the best way to get on rides with the shortest wait times, so that makes it a great way to start your day at Disneyland! Best rides to rope drop at Disneyland:

• Space Mountain
• Indiana Jones Adventure
• Big Thunder Mountain
• Haunted Mansion

Avoid at rope drop:

• Peter Pan’s Flight: the line fills immediately and stays long all day.
• Rise of the Resistance: it’s often delayed in the mornings, and the crowd rush can be overwhelming.

Best rides to rope drop at DCA:

• Incredicoaster
• Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!
• Toy Story Midway Mania
• WEB SLINGERS

Avoid at rope drop: Radiator Springs Racers – the line gets long right away and you’ll waste valuable low-wait time.

Breakfast tip: Grab something before you arrive or wait until later in the morning to take a break.

Right at Park Opening – The Balanced Approach

This is for those who don’t want to rope drop, but still want a full day in the parks. Arriving right at opening (usually 8:00 or 9:00 a.m.) still gives you a good head start. This is a great way to start your day at Disneyland if you’re not interested in getting up super early!

Expect light-to-moderate waits and a less rushed experience. This is a great option for:

• Families with young kids
• Guests who want a break midday
• Those who prefer not to wake up at 6:00 a.m.

Use this time to hit:

• Pirates of the Caribbean
• Jungle Cruise
• Haunted Mansion
• Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
• Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters

Arriving Later – The Night Owl Plan

Not a morning person? No problem. Just know that lines are longest from late morning through early evening.

If you’re arriving in the afternoon, be realistic. You won’t ride everything, but if you:

• Stay until closing
• Plan around entertainment
• Focus on atmosphere and food

…you can still have a great day.

Tip: The last two hours before closing are often the best time to ride popular attractions with lower wait times.

It’s that time of year again. Grad Nite is back at Disneyland Resort.

Every spring, thousands of high school seniors head to Disneyland to celebrate graduation with a special after-hours event. And if your trip overlaps with it, you might be wondering if it’s going to affect your vacation.

Take a deep breath. You’re going to be just fine.

I’ve been during Grad Nite, and I’m going to walk you through exactly what to expect, how it affects crowds, and how to plan your day so you still have an amazing trip.

Discount Disney Park Tickets And Hotels

Before we jump in, quick tip.

Do not pay full price for your Disneyland trip.

What Is Grad Nite at Disneyland

Grad Nite is a special ticketed event just for graduating high school seniors.

It takes place at Disney California Adventure on select nights in May and June. Students attend with their schools and chaperones, and they need a separate event ticket to get in.

Some students only attend the evening event, while others have tickets that let them visit both parks during the day before the party starts.

Here’s what happens.

California Adventure typically closes early to regular guests, usually around 9 pm. After that, the park is reserved just for Grad Nite attendees.

During the event, there are DJs, dance parties, photo opportunities, exclusive merchandise, and rides open late into the night.

Grad Nite Dates 2026

Disney has officially released the Grad Nite dates for 2026.

Here are the event nights:

May 8, 12, 13, 15, 17, 20, 21, 28, 29, and 31, 2026

June 3, 5, 7, 10, and 12, 2026

If your trip overlaps with any of these dates, you can expect higher crowd levels, especially in the afternoon and evening.

That said, mornings are still a great time to be in the parks, and with a good plan, you can absolutely work around it.

How Grad Nite Affects Crowds

Yes, the parks are more crowded on Grad Nite days, but it is very manageable if you plan ahead.

Here’s what the day typically looks like.

Mornings are great. Crowds are usually lower because most teens are not arriving at rope drop.

In the afternoon, things start to pick up as school groups enter the parks.

By evening, it feels noticeably busier, especially in California Adventure.

Once California Adventure closes for the private event, Disneyland Park continues operating like normal, but will feel busier.

Are the Teens a Problem

Let’s talk about this because I know it’s what everyone is thinking.

I had the exact same concern the first time I went during Grad Nite. I pictured big groups of rowdy teenagers taking over the park.

In my mind, I was sure the parks would be overrun by packs of wild, disrespectful teenagers who were hell-bent on turning my beloved Disneyland into some drunken, drug-filled rave. I have an active imagination:) I like to plan for the worst and hope for the best. 

That was not my experience at all.

The students I saw were excited, of course, but also respectful and well behaved. Disney has strict rules in place, and there is plenty of supervision.

Yes, it is louder and more energetic, but it is not chaotic.

Tips for Visiting During Grad Nite

1. Arrive early! Teens like to sleep in. Get to the parks in time for rope drop, and you’ll have short lines for the first part of your day. You can read all about rope drop here. This way, you get all your fun in before they arrive. It will get quite crowded in the late afternoon.

2. Use Lightning Lane Multi Pass! I know it costs extra, but use it if you can. I’ve got info on Lightning Lane Multi Pass here. This will be your best friend on a Grad Nite. It would be best to maximize your time; Lightning Lane Multi Pass is a great way to do that.

3. Download the Disneyland app before your trip. Then, you can use your mobile device to check wait times, see the entertainment schedule, and mobile order food.

4. If you have a park hopper, hit California Adventure first. Grads with park hoppers will most likely hit Disneyland first because they will have the run of California Adventure later that night. When it starts feeling too crowded, skip on over to Disneyland! You could also call it a night since you arrived early and beat the crowds.

5. Book a hotel with a great pool with my partners at Get Away Today. Ditching the crowds for the pool is always a good idea! Plus, they have discounted park tickets!

6. If you don’t have a park hopper consider spending the entire day at Disneyland if you want to stay past 9 pm.

7. Have a good attitude. That will take you a long way. Be patient and flexible with the kids all around you.

8. If you notice a teen who isn’t behaving suitably, notify a cast member. There are behavior guidelines that guests attending the private Grad Nite party are expected to uphold. Notify a cast member if you see an issue. They can help you.

9. Stay flexible. This matters more than anything. Have a plan, but be willing to adjust. Focus on what you are able to do instead of what you are missing.

10. Know when to call it a day If you rope dropped and had a super productive morning, you might be completely happy heading out earlier. That is still a great park day.

Final Thoughts

Grad Nite is not something you need to avoid.

Yes, it brings more people into the parks, but with a good plan, you can absolutely still have an amazing Disneyland day.

I have been during Grad Nite and would go again without hesitation.

Best Airport Near Disneyland

Here are the most popular airports near Disneyland. There are some other airports in the surrounding areas, but I didn’t feel like they had enough going for them to make this list! I’ve only included the airports that I think would be a decent choice for your vacation. Read through the pros and cons of each one and hopefully, it will help you find the best airport near Disneyland for you!

Los Angeles International Airport(LAX)

The LAX airport is a top choice for lots of people for their Disneyland vacation. You can usually find good deals when flying into this airport because it’s the biggest airport in the area. They also offer a lot of direct flights, which is really nice. However, LAX is quite far from the Disneyland Resort. When you factor in LA traffic, you can usually plan on about 60-120 minutes to get to the Disneyland area. They do have lots of transportation options to get you to Disneyland like shuttle services, rideshare, taxis, public transportation, or rental cars. Keep in mind, it can be quite expensive to pay for a shuttle or rideshare from LAX to the Disneyland area. Any money you save on the airline ticket might be lost on transportation.

Distance to Disneyland: 34 miles

Time from the airport to Disneyland: Anywhere from 60-120 minutes depending on traffic.

Pros:

• Can often find good deals
• Direct flights

Cons:

• Far away
• Crowded Airport
• Transportation costs can be high

Hollywood Burbank Airport(BUR)

The Hollywood Burbank Airport(formerly the Bob Hope Airport) is sometimes considered when visiting Disneyland in southern California. This airport is quite far away from Disneyland and it will take you awhile to get there. You can sometimes find good deals at this airport. If you happen to be visiting Universal Studios during your visit, then this airport might be a good choice because it’s so close to Universal Studios Hollywood. They do have lots of transportation options to get you to Disneyland like rideshare, taxis, or rental cars. Keep in mind, it can be quite expensive to pay for a shuttle or rideshare from BUR to the Disneyland area. Any money you save on the airline ticket might be lost on transportation. If you’re just doing Disneyland, this option is not high on my list because of the travel time involved in getting to Disneyland and the high cost of transportation.

Distance to Disneyland: 41 miles

Time from airport to Disneyland: Anywhere from 60-120 minutes depending on traffic.

Pros:

• Can often find good deals
• Direct flights

Cons:

• Far away
• Transportation costs can be high

Ontario International Airport(ONT)

Some people find great deals at the Ontario International Airport, but this airport is very far away from Disneyland and I wouldn’t fly in here. This is another of the major airports on my list. Larger airports often have great deals, but they are all just too far away from Disneyland to be convenient. They do have lots of transportation options to get you to Disneyland like shuttle services, rideshare, taxis, public transportation, or rental cars. Keep in mind, it can be quite expensive to pay for a shuttle or rideshare from ONT to the Disneyland area. Any money you save on the airline ticket might be lost on transportation.

Distance to Disneyland: 35 miles

Time from the airport to Disneyland: 90-180 minutes depending on the traffic

Pros:

• Can sometimes find good deals

Cons:

• Far away
• Crowded airport
• Transportation costs can be high

John Wayne Airport-Orange County(SNA)

I love the John Wayne airport! For me, this is the best airport near Disneyland. It’s also known as the Santa Ana airport. This smaller airport is the closest airport to Disneyland and is my personal preference when traveling to Disneyland California. They host many major airlines and if you’re looking for the quickest drive to Disneyland, this is your best bet. Prices can be a little higher here, but the lower cost of ground transportation usually evens it out for me. They do have lots of transportation options to get you to Disneyland like shuttle services, rideshare, taxis, public transportation, or rental cars.

Distance to Disneyland: 14 miles

Time from the airport to Disneyland: 15- 25 minutes depending on the traffic

Pros:

• Close to Disneyland
• Small airport
• Cheaper transportation

Cons:

• Ticket prices can be a bit higher than the farther away airports

Long Beach Airport(LGB)

Long Beach is another airport that I love! It’s a close second on my “best airport near Disneyland” list. It’s close to Disneyland, a smaller airport and is a great option for flying into Disneyland. Prices here are often a little lower than they are at SNA. Even though they’re a smaller airport, they have a lot of great flight options. They do have lots of transportation options to get you to Disneyland like shuttle services, rideshare, taxis, public transportation, or rental cars.

Distance to Disneyland: 18 miles

Time from the airport to Disneyland: 20-30 minutes depending on the traffic

Pros:

• Close to Disneyland
• Small airport
• Cheaper transportation

Cons:

• Ticket prices can be a bit higher than the farther away airports

Best Airport Near Disneyland(my personal opinion)

If you really want to know what the best airport near Disneyland is, it’s a toss up for me. My favorite airport to fly into is between John Wayne and Long Beach. Honestly, I’m completely happy with either one. They are both extremely close to Disneyland and are both smaller airports. I love smaller airports! Because they are less crowded they usually have shorter lines for everything, which is a bonus in my book! I hate crowds, especially at security and the baggage claim area!

Whenever I travel to Disneyland, I always price-check both of these airports. Then, I usually go with whichever one has the cheaper rates for my vacation days. You really can’t go wrong with either of these two options. So for me, the best airport near Disneyland is whichever one is the cheapest between the two!

If you can’t swing John Wayne or Long Beach, Los Angeles International Airport is a viable option. Just plan extra time into your travel plans to account for the distance and maybe add a little extra to the transportation portion of your budget.

Transportation To Disneyland

After you’ve figured out which is the best airport near Disneyland for your family, the next step is to figure out your transportation. Each airport will have shuttles, ride-share options(like Uber or Lyft), taxis, or rental car counters. If you have a small group and don’t want to rent a car, a ride-share option might be best for you. If you have a larger group or family you might want to consider renting a car or a shuttle service. I love the Karmel shuttle service.

Rope Drop At Disneyland

Rope dropping at Disneyland isn’t complicated, but if you understand how it works, you’ll be able to use it like a pro!

What is Rope Drop?

Rope drop at Disneyland refers to being inside one of the Disney parks right when they open up. Disneyland starts letting guests into their parks about 30 minutes before the official park opening time. You are allowed to enter Main Street(or Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure) and walk all the way to the end before you are stopped by cast members holding a rope that stretches the length of the street.

Right at opening time, you’ll hear an announcement welcoming you to the park for the day. The cast members will remove the rope and you’ll be free to head to your favorite Disney parks attraction. So, essentially, “rope drop” means that you’re one of the very first people to enter the parks for the day. There is no extra cost to rope drop. Anyone can do it.

Why Should I Rope Drop?

Rope dropping at Disneyland is a really great strategy to help you avoid long wait times. The shortest wait times at Disneyland are during the first 2 hours after the park opens. By rope dropping, you can take full advantage of the short wait times and get on the most popular attractions that will have long wait times later in the day. Rope dropping at Disneyland is one of my top tips to ensure you have the best time at Disneyland! You can find my other top tips here.

Because you arrive early, you’re already in the park and getting on your favorite attractions like Space Mountain as soon as the park opens! You’re living your best Disney life while the rest of the park goers are just getting to security and fighting high crowds to even enter the front gates.

How To Rope Drop

Rope dropping at the Disneyland resort involves getting up early! I hate to be the one to tell you that, but it’s true. If you’re not able to get up and to the parks early, rope dropping might not be the best strategy for you. In order to rope drop efficiently, you’ll need to arrive at the security gates 45- 60 minutes before the park opens. You’ll go through bag check and security, then you’ll line up at the front gate. About 30 minutes before the park officially opens, cast members will start allowing people through the front gates.

Once you’re inside the park, you will head straight to your first attraction until you’re stopped by a cast member and the actual rope. Here, you’ll wait until the park is officially open. It’s going to seem crowded in this moment. You might find yourself thinking, “Oh my goodness. Today is going to be crazy crowded. I can’t believe all these people are here!” Just take a few calming breaths. Everything is fine. It only appears super crowded. Once the rope drops and guests start to disperse to the different lands and Disney park attractions, crowds will thin and you won’t believe how empty the parks feels. Trust me on this one.

Once the park is officially open and you’re released by the cast members you can head to your first chosen attraction. You’ll be able to walk on most attractions for the first hour or so. Make sure you choose which attractions you rope drop wisely! It can make a huge difference to your over all day. Keep reading to find out which attractions are best to rope drop and which attractions you should steer clear or during rope drop.

Which Attractions To NOT Rope Drop At Disneyland

There’s several attractions that I don’t recommend when rope dropping at Disneyland. Number one on my list is Rise of the Resistance. For some reason, the majority of Disney park guests seem to think that the new Star Wars attraction, Rise of the Resistance in Galaxy’s Edge is going to be less crowded in the morning. While most attractions are less crowded in the morning, this is one of the few exceptions. Hundreds of guests rush there each morning making the first few hours of the park the most busy of the entire day for this particular ride.

This is the same for Peter Pan. Bunches of guests rush to Fantasyland to try to be the first ones on Peter Pan’s Flight, thinking they will experience shorter wait times. When in fact, they are actually waiting longer than they would if they had waited until later in the day.

The very worst part about rope dropping Rise of the Resistance or Peter Pan is that these misguided folks are now stuck in long lines and wasting prime morning hours that are famous for low crowds! It’s sad, really. Lucky for us, you now know better and won’t waste your precious morning hours on these attractions. Keep reading to find out when the best times to ride Peter Pan and Rise of the Resistance.

Which Attractions To Rope Drop At Disneyland

The list of which attractions to ride at Disneyland is long! There’s so many great options. As long as you avoid the ones I mentioned above, you really can’t go wrong. I like to check off some of the big ticket attractions during the first 2 hours. I usually rope drop Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, then head to Jungle Cruise, Indiana Jones, Pirates and Haunted Mansion. I’m able to check of 5 big rides in the first 90 minutes or so of the parks being open!

Or, some days I’ll start with Space Mountain and then head to Star Tours, Buzz Light Year, Matterhorn and Alice in Wonderland. Again, 5 big rides checked off my list in the first 90 minutes! That’s a big deal.

If you’re not really interested in riding the headliner attractions first thing, or want to save them to use with Lightning Lane Multi Pass later in the day, Fantasyland is a great place to start. This land is the perfect place for small children to start their day and has some of my favorite attractions! Did you know, if you’re the very first group on Storybook Land Canal Boats you get to sign the Captain’s Book? It’s pretty adorable! This is another great first ride.

Which Attractions To NOT Rope Drop At California Adventure

Just like my list of attractions to not rope drop at Disneyland, California Adventure has an attraction that you should steer clear of during the morning hours. That attraction is Radiator Springs Racers, in Carsland. This popular attraction is swarmed in the morning with frantic guests trying to ride it first thing. It’s actually quite stressful. If it’s an early entry day at California Adventure(more on that in a minute), guests with early entry will already be in line by the time you get into the park, so you’ll have a long wait first thing in the morning. Save it for later in the day. The wait time for this attraction usually drops quite a bit in the evening.

Which Attractions To Rope Drop At California Adventure

There’s so many great rides to rope drop at Disney’s California Adventure! I usually like to head to Guardians of the Galaxy or Pixar Pier first. If you head to Pixar Pier you can do Goofy’s Sky school, Incredicoaster and Toy Story, plus a few extras in the first 2 hours. It’s a great place to start! Save Little Mermaid for later in the day. That attraction always has a short wait time.

But, I Heard It’s Best To Rope Drop The Biggest Rides!

I’m sure you’ve heard this. Lots of Disney bloggers recommend it. I’ve done test after test on rope drop strategies and I don’t want you to even attempt them. Please trust me. I will say, occasionally, I’ve had success rope dropping Rise of the Resistance, Peter Pan or Radiator Springs Racers. But, it’s not often.

If you have a stroller with you or small kids, don’t bother. If anyone in your group is not willing to speed walk in a group of pushing guests, don’t bother. If you have anxiety in large crowds, don’t bother.

However, If you have a group of teenagers or adults and who are able bodied and up for a challenge, you just might be able to pull it off. But, only if you are close enough to actually see the rope and speak to cast members holding the rope before the park opens. If you are not that close, you’re too far way to successfully rope drop any of the attractions listed above. If you go this route, Godspeed.

Rope Dropping With Lightning Lane Multi Pass

Disney Lightning Lane Multi Pass is the new system at Disneyland that replaced the old MaxPass/FastPass system. You can find more info on it here. You can definitely combine Lightning Lane Multi Pass with your rope drop strategy. Combining the two is a great idea!

Because of low wait times in the morning, I don’t recommend using Lightning Lane Multi Pass until after lunch if you are not park hopping. Take advantage of the low wait times and save your Lightning Lane Multi Pass Lightning Lanes for later in the day when crowds are higher and wait times are longer. I recommend pulling your first Lightning Lane Multi Pass Lightning Lane about 90 minutes after the park opens,

If you are park hopping, you’ll be able to hop to your second park at 11:00am. Since you’ll have a limited amount of time at your first park you’ll want to use Lightning Lane Multi Pass earlier in the day. Start using you’re Lightning lanes on the bigger attractions like Indiana Jones and Space Mountain right away so you’ll be ready to hope later in the day.

Who Shouldn’t Rope Drop At Disneyland

Now, there’s some of you out there that really probably shouldn’t rope drop. I hate to say it, but it’s true. If you have very small children who need to sleep in and have a leisurely breakfast, rope dropping might not be for you. If you(or someone in your group) absolutely hate mornings and are going to complain and grumble all day about getting up early, rope dropping might not be for you. If your idea of a vacation doesn’t include getting up early and you’d much rather sleep in and deal with larger crowds, rope dropping might not be for you.

Rope dropping isn’t for everyone. You can still have a wonderful vacation at the Disney parks without rope dropping. I do recommend arriving as early as you’re able so you can take advantage of the low wait times for the most popular rides in the morning. Avoiding long waits is always a good idea!

When To Ride Rise Of The Resistance And Radiator Spring Racers

I don’t recommend rope dropping Rise of the Resistance. Everyone rushes there and chances are your wait times will be just as long as they will later in the day. For Rise of the Resistance, I recommend riding it later in the day.

Rise Of The Resistance closed about 2 hours BEFORE the rest of the park closes. Check the app on the day of your visit to see what time it will be closing that day. Jump in line for it about 10 minutes before the attraction closes for the day and you’ll usually only wait about 20 minutes or less.

I don’t recommend rope-dropping Radiator Springs Racers. Everyone rushes there and chances are your wait times will be just as long as they will later in the day. For Radiator Springs Racers, I recommend riding it later in the day. About 1 hour before the park closes the lines are usually fairly short(under 60 minutes) and the sun has gone down so it’s not hot. You can also take advantage of their single rider line or pay for an individual lightning lane. More info here.
