20 Things You Should Never Buy At The Disney Parks
1. Character Merchandise
Assessment: Let’s talk about the siren call of character-themed merchandise – you know, the stuff dreams are made of. From cuddly plush toys to sparkly tiaras adorned with your favorite Disney princess, there’s no denying the irresistible allure of these magical treasures. But here’s the kicker – all that enchantment comes with a hefty price tag.
With character merchandise, you’re not just paying for the item itself—you’re paying for the experience, the memories, and, yes, even a little sprinkle of that Disney magic.
Suggestions: Now, I know what you’re thinking—can you snag those coveted character goodies without maxing out your credit card? Yes! First, consider souvenir shopping outside the parks. That’s right—many local stores, discount outlets, and online retailers offer similar items at a fraction of the cost. Check out my favorite Disney finds on Amazon! You can save a lot by skipping the gift shops on your Disney trip and pre-buying character merchandise outside the parks.
2. Ponchos and Rain Gear
Assessment: Let’s talk about the not-so-magical reality of rainy days at Disney parks. Picture this: you’re standing in line for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, eagerly anticipating the wildest ride in the wilderness, when suddenly, the heavens open up and the skies unleash a torrential downpour. Cue the panicked scramble for rain gear – and cue the shock when you realize how much those ponchos will set you back. Spoiler alert: it ain’t pretty.
The prices of Disney ponchos and other rain gear at Disney parks can be enough to make your umbrella wilt. But, when you’re caught in a sudden downpour, you’ll pay just about anything to stay dry. This is on my list of things you should never buy at the Disney parks because you can get them so much cheaper everywhere else!
Suggestions: So, what’s a park-goer to do? First off, consider packing your own rain gear before you even set foot in the park. That’s right – a compact umbrella, a lightweight poncho, or even a sturdy rain jacket can be lifesavers when the skies decide to open up.
I have a post about how to deal with Disneyland in the rain. It applies to Disney World too!
3. Glow-in-the-Dark Merchandise
Assessment: There’s just something undeniably cool about watching your favorite Disney characters come to life in a neon glow, whether it’s on a t-shirt, a Disney souvenir cups, or even a pair of mouse ears. But that glow-in-the-dark magic often comes with a hefty price tag.
As much as we love those luminescent treasures, the cost can leave us feeling a little in the dark.
Suggestions: Consider doing pre-park shopping for glow-in-the-dark merch. Many online retailers, discount stores, and specialty shops offer glow-in-the-dark merchandise at a fraction of the cost you’ll find at the parks. I like to buy glow sticks at the dollar store and pull them out after the sun goes down. They’re much cheaper outside the parks which is why they’re on my list of things you should never buy at the Disney parks.
4. Autograph Books
Assessment: Let’s talk about autograph books – those little spiral-bound treasures that have us all feeling like VIPs as we collect signatures from our favorite Disney characters. Don’t get me wrong – there’s something undeniably magical about flipping through the pages of an autograph book filled with signatures from Mickey, Minnie, and the gang. But here’s the thing – do we really need to shell out our hard-earned cash for these pricey souvenirs?
Suggestions: If autograph books are more of a want than a need, how can you satisfy your signature-collecting cravings without breaking the bank? First off, consider getting crafty and making your own personalized autograph book. You only need a plain notebook, markers or pens, and a healthy dose of creativity. I’ve got some cute, printable Disney autograph pages if you need some inspiration!
Or, if you’re not feeling crafty, Amazon has some great ones at a fraction of the price you’ll pay at Disneyland or Walt Disney World Resort.
5. Costumes
Pin this so you can find it later!
Assessment: Kids love to wear costumes at Disney parks! There’s something undeniably enchanting about donning a princess gown or slipping into a superhero suit. But here’s the million-dollar question – are Disney park costumes worth the price tag?
Sure, those park-branded costumes may be made with top-notch materials and adorned with all the bells and whistles, but they are expensive. That’s why they’re on my list of things you should never buy at the Disney Parks.
Suggestions: Instead of buying a costume in the Disney parks, why not bring one from home? Chances are you already have your kid’s favorite characters’ costumes lying around the house.
Or, buy one online before your trip! Amazon has some fantastic deals on costumes, and theirs are a fraction of the price!
6. Breakfast in the Parks
Assessment: Let’s talk about the most important meal of the day—breakfast! When you’re gearing up for a day of nonstop Disney magic, you’ll need all the fuel you can get to power through those long lines and endless photo ops. But here’s the burning question—is breakfast in the parks really worth the time and money?
Sure, there’s something undeniably magical about tucking into Mickey-shaped waffles or indulging in a hearty breakfast buffet with your favorite Disney characters. But here’s the catch—breakfast in the parks can be pricey, and mornings are the least crowded time of the day! Do you really want to spend the least crowded time of the day eating(and paying for) an expensive breakfast?
Suggestions: Consider bringing your own breakfast into the parks. That’s right – packing some granola bars, fruit, or protein drinks can save you a bundle and give you the fuel you need to tackle those attractions like a pro.
Or, consider booking a hotel that offers a free breakfast option! You can eat before heading to the parks and do it for free!
Skipping breakfast in the parks is high on my list of things you should never buy at the Disney Parks not just because of the money you’ll save, but the time saved too!
7. Bottled Water
Pin This!
Assessment: Staying hydrated is so important, especially on a hot day! When hiking around the parks under that blazing central Florida or California sun, keeping those H2O levels topped up is crucial. You’ll need lots of water, but purchasing a bottle of water in the parks is expensive, and those costs add up quickly!
Suggestions: Consider bringing your own reusable water bottle into the parks. Packing your own bottle and refilling it at the park water fountains or hydration stations can save you a bundle and help reduce plastic waste at the same time. It’s a win-win!
You can also get complimentary cups of water from all the quick-service restaurants at any of the Disney resorts! Plus, you’ll often find water fountains tucked away in quiet corners of the parks, perfect for filling up your bottle without waiting in line.
Free water instead of paying a crazy price per bottle? Sign me up! Water is high on my list of things you should never buy at the Disney Parks.
8. Snacks
Assessment: Time to talk about one of my favorite things: snacks! Whether you’re craving something sweet, salty, or somewhere in between, Disney parks have got you covered with a smorgasbord of delicious snacks and treats. But here’s the big question – are those park snacks worth the splurge?
There’s no denying the allure of those iconic Disney snacks – from churros to Dole Whips to Mickey-shaped everything, the options are endless. But all that deliciousness often comes with a hefty price tag.
Don’t get me wrong – treating yourself to a Mickey ice cream bar or a giant turkey leg can be part of the Disney experience. But when you consider how quickly those snack purchases can add up throughout your visit, you might wonder if there’s a more budget-friendly way to satisfy your cravings.
Suggestions: Consider bringing your own snacks into the parks. Packing some granola bars, fruit, or even a bag of your favorite chips can save you a bundle and give you the energy you need to tackle those attractions like a pro.
9. Fuel Rod Charger
Pin This So You Can Find It Later!
Assessment: Let’s talk about a lifesaver often overlooked in the whirlwind of Disney park fun – the trusty Fuel Rod charger. When your phone battery dwindles, this little device can be a real game-changer. But is it really worth the hype (and the price tag)?
We’ve all been there – you’re halfway through the day, snapping pics with Mickey and checking wait times on the My Disney Experience app when suddenly, your phone starts screaming for a charge. Enter the Fuel Rod charger, swooping in to save the day with its promise of instant power at your fingertips. But here’s the catch – convenience comes at a cost.
Suggestions: Consider bringing your own portable charger into the parks. Investing in a reliable portable charger that you can use again and again can save you a bundle in the long run.
If you do want to go the fuel rod route so you can be sure you always have access to a fully charged phone, consider purchasing a fuel rod before your visit. You can buy fuel rods on Amazon much cheaper than you can buy them in the parks.
10. Sunscreen
Assessment: Sunscreen isn’t just a suggestion—it’s an absolute must-have for anyone spending a day in the parks. But while sunscreen is essential, paying inflated prices for it in the parks can feel like a real burn.
Suggestions: Consider bringing your own sunscreen into the parks. Packing a bottle of your favorite SPF can save you a bundle and give you peace of mind, knowing you’re using a product that works for your skin.
I prefer a mineral-based sunscreen because it protects my skin better than chemical sunscreens. You can’t purchase this kind of sunscreen at the Disney parks. So, of course sunscreen had to be on my list of things you should never buy at the Disney Parks.
11. Balloons
Assessment: Let’s talk about something that adds a little extra magic to the Disney experience – balloons! Those colorful, helium-filled orbs have been a staple of Disney parks for as long as we can remember, and it’s easy to see why. But are those iconic Mickey balloons really worth the splurge?
Okay, let’s start with the obvious – Disney balloons are undeniably adorable. Who can resist the sight of those giant Mickey-shaped balloons bobbing through the air, bringing smiles to the faces of young and old alike? But here’s the catch–all that magic comes with a price tag that might leave your wallet feeling a little deflated.
Sure, those balloons make for Instagram-worthy photo ops, but you might question whether they’re really worth the splurge. After all, there’s only so much room in your suitcase for Disney souvenirs, right?
Suggestions: Consider setting a budget for souvenirs before you even set foot in the parks. That way, you can prioritize which souvenirs are worth splurging on and which ones you can live without. Once you’ve set your budget, a balloon might not make the top of your priority list; you might even find it to be a waste of money.
12. Medication
Assessment: Let’s talk about something that might not be as flashy as Mickey ears or as tasty as a Dole Whip, but is just as essential for a day in the Disney parks – medication. Whether you’re battling a headache, an upset stomach, or need a little extra pep in your step, having some basic meds on hand can make all the difference.
Nobody wants to deal with a pounding headache or an upset stomach while trying to enjoy Disney’s magic. That’s where medication comes in handy. But here’s the thing – buying medicines in the parks can be a bit of a pain in the you-know-what (pun intended). Not only are the prices inflated, but finding the right medication when you need it can be a bit of a scavenger hunt.
Sure, there are First Aid stations in the parks where you can get basic meds like pain relievers, but they’re not always conveniently located, and you might waste precious park time searching for them.
Suggestions: Consider packing your own medication before you even set foot in the parks. Throwing a few pain relievers, antacids, and other essentials into your bag can save you a bundle and ensure that you’re prepared for whatever ails you.
If you forget to pack your meds or need something specific that you can’t find in the parks, don’t worry – there are still options available. Many of the shops in the parks sell basic medications, but they can be pricey, so be prepared to shell out a little extra cash. Alternatively, you can ask Cast Members for help – they might be able to point you in the direction of a nearby pharmacy or recommend a suitable alternative.
13. Souvenir Popcorn Bucket
Assessment: Let’s talk about one of the most iconic and collectible souvenirs in the parks – the souvenir popcorn bucket. You know the one I’m talking about – those snazzy containers shaped like your favorite Disney characters, filled with buttery goodness. But are these popcorn buckets really worth the hype (and the price tag)?
Let’s start with the obvious – souvenir popcorn buckets are downright adorable. But all that cuteness comes with a price, not just the cost of the popcorn itself.
Plus, let’s be honest – how many popcorn buckets can one person realistically use or display at home? This is one of the top things you should never buy at the Disney Parks.
Suggestions: Consider skipping the souvenir popcorn bucket and just buying the regular-size popcorn in that box. It’s much cheaper, and you can throw the box away when you’re done with your snack!
14. Souvenir Drink Sipper
Assessment: Have you seen the souvenir drink sipper? You know, those funky cups shaped like your favorite Disney characters or themed to match the latest attraction. Are these sipper cups really worth snagging (and the price tag)?
Let’s start with the obvious – souvenir drink sippers are just downright cool. Who wouldn’t want to sip their favorite beverage from a cup shaped like Mickey Mouse or a Stormtrooper helmet?
But here’s the thing – all that fun comes at a price. Yup, souvenir drink sippers can be a bit pricey, especially when you’re essentially paying for a fancy cup.
Suggestions: You can save a lot of money by skipping the souvenir sipper and purchasing regular drinks. Or, you can save even more by drinking free water! Unless you’re really set on this purchase, it’s probably a good one to put on the things you should never buy at the Disney Parks list.
15. Disney Park Tickets
Assessment: Let’s discuss one of the most crucial elements of planning your epic Disney adventure – tickets! Yup, those golden tickets that grant you access to the happiest places on earth. But here’s the scoop – before you rush off to buy your tickets straight from the Disney website, let me introduce you to a game-changer: my travel partner, Get Away Today. They’re about to become your new best friend when scoring the best deals on Disney tickets. Let me tell you why!

16. Hand Sanitizer
Assessment: Hand sanitizer has become more important than ever in our daily lives. That trusty little bottle of germ-killing goodness has become a must-have accessory for any outing, including your adventures in the Disney parks.
Relying solely on the park-provided hand sanitizer might not always be your best bet.
Sure, Disney tries to provide hand sanitizer stations throughout the parks, but they can sometimes be few and far between, especially during busy times, and I’ve found that these days, they are often empty.
Disney sells hand sanitizer in its gift shops, but of course, it costs more than it would anywhere else in the world.
Suggestions: Don’t leave home without your trusty bottle of hand sanitizer. It’s just a good idea to have it with you. Having your own sanitizer on hand means you can zap those germs whenever and wherever you need to without having to hunt down a sanitizer station.
17. Misting Fans
Assessment: If you’re visiting Disney theme parks when it’s hot, you’ll see people using misting fans. These handy little gadgets spray a refreshing mist of water to keep you cool and comfortable, even on the hottest days. But are these misting fans really worth adding to your park essentials?
Summers in the Disney parks can be downright sweltering. Staying cool can feel like an uphill battle, with temperatures soaring and humidity levels through the roof. That’s where misting fans come in clutch.
But here’s the thing – misting fans aren’t cheap, and lugging around a bulky fan all day is annoying. Plus, they usually don’t work well and must be refilled often. Expensive and don’t work well? No wonder this is on my list of things you should never buy at the Disney Parks.
Suggestions: While misting fans can be helpful for staying cool in the parks, they’re not necessarily a must-have for everyone. I’d skip it and opt for a handheld fan or cooling towels instead.
18. Cooling Towels
Assessment: Cooling towels can be a game-changer on a hot day! These small items are easy to throw in a backpack and can really help keep you cool. But are these cooling towels really worth buying in the park?
Suggestions: Here’s my take—if you struggle with the heat or tend to get overheated easily, investing in a cooling towel might be a game-changer for your Disney adventures. They provide instant relief from the heat, but they also pack down small and are easy to stash in your bag when not in use.
But they are expensive to purchase in the parks! Adding it to your bag before you even arrive on your Disneyland or Disney World vacation is a great idea. I buy my cooling towels on Amazon.
19. Mickey Mouse Ears
Assessment: Let’s talk about one of the most iconic and beloved accessories in the Disney parks – Mickey Mouse ears. But before you rush off to buy your ears from the park, let me introduce you to a hidden gem: Alli’s Ears. Trust me, you’re in for a treat when you discover the amazing selection and unbeatable prices that Alli’s Ears has to offer.
Buying ears from the park can be pricey, and who wants to spend a small fortune on a single accessory? That’s where Alli’s Ears comes in.
Alli’s Ears offers a wide variety of Disney ears at prices that won’t make your wallet cry tears of Mickey-shaped sadness. She’s got so many designs to choose from, and her ears are incredibly comfortable!
Suggestions: Before you splurge on ears from the park, take a peek at what Alli’s Ears has to offer. Not only will you find a wider selection of styles and designs, but you’ll also save yourself some serious cash in the process. Use code Mixinmagic10 for 10% off!
20. Stroller Rental
Assessment: A stroller is essential for navigating Disney parks with little kids. Before you rush off to rent a stroller from the park, let me introduce you to a game-changing option: OC Baby Gear. Trust me, renting from OC Baby Gear instead will make your Disney adventure even smoother and more convenient.
Picture this – you’re gearing up for a day of Disney magic with your little ones in tow, and you know that having a stroller is an absolute must. But here’s the thing – renting a stroller from the park can be a bit of a hassle. Not only do you have to wait in line to pick one up, but you’re also limited to using it only within the park gates.
That’s where OC Baby Gear comes in. They offer a wide selection of high-quality strollers that can be delivered directly to your hotel, so you can hit the ground running as soon as you arrive in Disneyland. Plus, their strollers are comfy, durable, and equipped with all the bells and whistles you need to keep your little ones happy and comfortable throughout the day.
Suggestions: Skip the hassle of renting from the park and opt for OC Baby Gear instead. Not only will you save time, money, and energy, but you’ll also have the peace of mind knowing that you’re getting a top-notch stroller that’s perfect for navigating the Disney parks. Use code mixin5 for $5 off your rental! This is one of the top things to never buy at the Disney parks.
Wrap Up
Phew! That’s quite a list of things you should never buy at the Disney Parks, huh? With this knowledge, you’ll be well-equipped to make wise spending choices during your Disney adventure. Now, you have different ways to still get great souvenirs.
By being aware of the items that tend to be overpriced in the Disney parks and exploring alternative options, you can make your Disney experience magical and affordable. Remember, a little planning and savvy shopping can stretch your Disney dollars without sacrificing any of the fun!
So, as you enjoy your Disney Parks adventure, I encourage you to prioritize experiences over material purchases. Focus on making memories with your loved ones, soaking up the parks’ magic, and immersing yourself in the wonder of it all. You’re going to have such a good time!
