How Many Days Do You Need For Your First Trip?
How many days do you need for your first trip? I always recommend people do at least three days for their first visit. This is the sweet spot. It’s enough time that you will feel relaxed but not so long that you get tired of the theme parks experience. I like two days at Disneyland and one day at California Adventure Park.
Which Disneyland Park Is The Best To Go To First?
Which Disneyland park is the best to go to first? Disneyland is a great way to start your vacation with a hefty dose of Disney magic! Nothing beats walking down Main Street and getting that first glimpse of Sleeping Beauty Castle! It’s the perfect way for first-time visitors to kick off their vacation!
How Do I Make My First Disneyland Trip Feel Special?
How do I make my first Disneyland trip feel special? You don’t have to try hard to make a Disneyland vacation as first-timers feel special! It’s automatically going to be special because it’s new! Nothing beats riding Pirates of the Caribbean or Haunted Mansion for the first time! You could also get a free “First Visit” button from any of the cast members inside most shops. Meeting Mickey Mouse and friends for a picture is also a great way to make your Disney vacation feel extra special!
How Many Hours Is Enough In Disneyland?
How many hours do you need to spend in Disneyland? This is really up to you! I prefer to spend as much time as possible to get my money’s worth. But, families with young children may need to leave early to get them to bed. I recommend getting to the parks as early as possible and staying as long as possible. There’s enough to do to fill your day!
Preparing for Your Disneyland Adventure
Choosing the Perfect Time to Visit
Your journey to the magical world of Disneyland begins with selecting the perfect time to visit. Choosing when to visit can often be overwhelming for guests visiting Disneyland for the first time. Each season at Disneyland offers a unique experience, and understanding the crowd levels and weather conditions can significantly impact your trip. Deciding when to visit might be the most essential part of the first-timer’s guide to Disneyland. Remember that there’s no perfect time for everyone. Select a time that works best for you.
Check out my post on When To Visit Disneyland for helpful information.
- Off-Peak vs. Peak Seasons: If you prefer fewer crowds and shorter wait times for popular attractions, consider visiting during the off-peak seasons, such as January to March and September to November. On the other hand, peak seasons, like summer and major holidays, boast special events and extended park hours but come with larger crowds.
- Special Events Calendar: Check Disneyland’s special events calendar, which includes themed celebrations, festivals, and limited-time experiences. Whether it’s the vibrant Lunar New Year celebration or the spooky Halloween festivities, these events can add more magic to your visit.
- Weather Considerations: Anaheim generally enjoys a mild and sunny climate, but temperatures vary throughout the year. Be prepared for hot summers and chilly evenings during the winter months. Always check the weather forecast before your trip and dress accordingly.
Booking Tickets and Accommodations
Once you’ve decided on the best time to visit Disneyland, booking your park tickets and accommodations is the next crucial step. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your booking process when visiting Disneyland for the first time:
- Purchase Tickets in Advance and make a park reservation: Don’t wait to book your park tickets! I always book my tickets through Get Away Today. Their tickets are always discounted off the gate price, so you know you’ll get the best deal possible. Please don’t pay the full price for your Disneyland Park tickets! With the first-timer’s guide to Disneyland, one of my goals is to help you save money. Once you have your tickets, you’ll need to make park reservations. Reservations can be made 120 days in advance.
- Park Hopper Tickets. Are They Worth The Extra Cost?: If you want to experience both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, consider purchasing Park Hopper tickets. This allows you to hop between the two parks on the same day, providing a more diverse and comprehensive experience. I think park hopping isn’t worth the extra money, especially for first-time visitors. I’d rather you save that money and put it towards Lightning Lane Multi Pass. More info on genie plus later in the post!
- Choose On-Site or Off-Site Accommodations: Disneyland offers a variety of on-site Disneyland Resort hotels with convenient proximity to the parks, providing easy access and some exclusive perks like Early Entry. My favorite on-property option is the Disneyland Hotel. Check out my guide to staying on property at Disneyland to help you decide if this is a good option. If you’re on a budget, off-site accommodations can also be a great option, with many hotels offering shuttle services to the park. Some of my favorite hotels are located just across the street from Disneyland! This post about hotels near Disneyland will be helpful for you.
- Hotel Reservations: Secure your hotel reservations as early as possible, especially during peak seasons, to ensure availability and secure the best rates. Please don’t pay full price for your hotel! Again, Get Away Today has the best deals around! They have hotel deals if you want to stay on Disneyland property or great deals for off-property sites. Many of the properties they sell offer a buy three nights get the 4th-night free option! If you book your hotel and tickets through them in a package, you can use my code MIX10 to save even more! Check them out online or call them at 1-855- GET- AWAY. Tell them Mix In Some Magic sent you for the best deals.
Packing Tips for a Comfortable Experience
Packing wisely can significantly impact your comfort and enjoyment when visiting Disneyland for the first time. Take a look at my printable Disneyland packing list! Having a complete list of what you should bring is helpful. A packing list had to be in my first-timer’s guide to Disneyland.
Here are some essential items to include in your packing list:
- Comfortable Footwear: With miles of walking ahead, comfortable and well-broken-in shoes are a must. Avoid new shoes that might cause discomfort or blisters.
- Layered Clothing: The weather in Anaheim can be unpredictable, so dress in layers to adjust to temperature changes throughout the day. Remember a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
- Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat will help protect you from the California sun during the day.
- Refillable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during warm days. Bring a refillable water bottle and take advantage of the water fountains located throughout the park.
- Backpack or Bag: A comfortable and spacious backpack is handy for carrying essentials such as water, snacks, a camera, and any souvenirs you might purchase.
- Portable Phone Charger: You’ll likely use your phone for photos, navigation, and checking wait times on the Disneyland app. A portable phone charger ensures your device stays powered throughout the day.
- First-Aid Kit: A small first-aid kit with band-aids, pain relievers, and other essentials can be helpful for any minor discomforts.
- Autograph Book and Pen: If you’re traveling with kids or a Disney enthusiast, an autograph book and pen are perfect for collecting signatures from beloved Disney characters.

Maximizing Your Disneyland Experience
Creating a Flexible Itinerary
While Disneyland is filled with magical experiences, trying to do everything in one visit can be overwhelming. To maximize your time, create a flexible itinerary that allows for spontaneity while ensuring you hit the highlights.
- Prioritize Must-See Attractions: Identify the must-see attractions and experiences for your group. Plan to visit these when the lines are typically shorter, such as early morning or during parades.
- Utilize the Disneyland App: Keep an eye on wait times and show schedules using the Disneyland app. This will help you plan your day effectively and adjust your itinerary based on real-time information.
- Break for Meals and Rest: Schedule meal breaks and relaxation time to recharge throughout the day. This will prevent burnout and energize everyone in your party for the fun ahead.
- Printable Disneyland Touring Plan: If planning your park day stresses you out, use one of my printable touring plans! It will give you a step-by-step guide to your day, so all you have to do is show up and enjoy!
Understanding Disneyland’s Lightning Lane Multi Pass System
Disneyland offers Lightning Lane Multi Pass to help you reduce wait times for popular attractions. Lightning Lane Multi Pass is an additional cost and can be purchased with your park tickets through Get Away Today, or you can buy it once you’re in the parks for the day. The cost of Lightning Lane Multi Pass can fluctuate depending on the day. If you’d like to utilize it, purchase it with your park tickets to save money.
Read my guide to Lightning Lane Multi Pass to help you decide if it’s worth the extra cost. This guide will also teach you how to use the system to take full advantage of it! Don’t waste your money on it if you don’t understand how to use it when visiting Disneyland for the first time.
How to Tackle Crowds and Long Lines Strategically
Navigating crowds is part of the Disneyland experience, but there are ways to minimize the impact and make the most of your day. Most Disneyland first-timers waste a ton of time in line when they don’t have to! Don’t let this happen to you!
- Arrive Early: Being one of the first guests to enter the park grants you access to popular attractions with shorter wait times. Use this time to experience significant rides before the crowds arrive. Arriving early is called rope dropping, and it’s so effective! Make sure you read my guide to rope-dropping so you can do it like a pro!
- Use Rider Switch: If you’re traveling with children who can’t or don’t want to ride certain attractions, utilize the Rider Switch program. This allows one adult to wait with the non-riding child while others experience the ride, and then the waiting adult can switch without waiting in line again. It’s a great system! Find more information in my post about Rider Switch.
- Take Advantage of Single-Rider Lines: Disneyland offers single-rider lines for certain attractions, which can significantly reduce wait times for solo visitors or groups willing to split up temporarily. Here’s a post with information on which attractions have a Single Rider option.
Disneyland Entertainment and Parades Schedule
Disneyland offers a variety of entertainment options, including parades, shows, and character meet-and-greets. Be sure to check the entertainment schedule on the Disneyland app or park guide to plan your day around these delightful experiences.
- Parades: Disneyland’s parades are a highlight of the day, featuring beloved characters, music, and stunning floats. Find a spot early along the parade route to secure a good view.
- Shows and Entertainment: Check the schedule for shows, fireworks, and other entertainment offerings. Plan your day around these events to ensure you get all the magic.
Flexibility is critical; sometimes, the best moments at Disneyland happen when you stumble upon unexpected experiences. Be willing to embrace flexibility when visiting Disneyland for the first time!
